Currency and Exchange:
Currency in Tibet is Chinese RMB or Chinese Yuan. Chinese Yuan is also known as Ren minbi (RMB). Notes come in denomination of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 Yuan. The current rate of the Yuan is about 6.50 for 1 US Dollar. However the exchange rate keep changing and it is better to recheck again before you go. Beside Chinese Yuan, only US Dollar is acceptable. Bank of China, only few hotels and fewer shops accept your credit card. If you are travelling out of Lhasa, we suggest you to get a small denomination of Cash with you. Please also note that Banks are closed in Saturday and Sunday in Tibet.
Money changer/ ATMS/ Bank in Tibet:
There are very few ATMs and money changer in Lhasa. Only bank of China accept foreigner exchanger facility in Tibet. It is hard to change your currency (USD) out of Lhasa. Better to have enough money with you while going out of Lhasa. Credit cards are use only in big hotels of Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse. Beside that there are few shops accept credit card in Lhasa. Out of Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse, it is necessary to take cash Yuan cash everywhere.
