Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026 and 2027 Overview

In this ten-day journey, you'll travel from Kathmandu through the Kyirong border into Tibet on a complete Saga Dawa festival tour. You'll go overland across the Tibetan Plateau, see sacred Lake Mansarovar and visit the base of Mount Kailash. It's considered the most holy mountain in the world by Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and followers of Bon.

The timing of this trip is essential. You'll arrive at Mount Kailash during the holy month of Saga Dawa in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar. And you'll participate in the Tarboche flagpole ceremony, the most iconic Buddhist festival Kailash Mansarovar has to offer, before starting the three-day circumambulation or Kora around Mount Kailash.

This isn't something you'll do at a distance. You'll walk alongside Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims on a Tibet pilgrimage Saga Dawa has made famous for centuries, participate in prayer ceremonies and perform the same 53-kilometre circumnavigation that has been completed by millions over the centuries.

2026 makes this trip even more special. It's the Kailash Kora Horse Year 2026. Horse Years occur only once every 12 years. And anyone who completes the Kailash Kora during a Horse Year receives the merit of having completed 13 normal Kora circuits. If you've ever considered making this pilgrimage, do it in 2026. Don't wait.

Dream Tibet Travel has made all the arrangements necessary for this Saka Dawa 2026 tour package. That includes your Tibet Travel Permit, Chinese Group Visa, transportation, accommodation and your Tibetan guide. You simply need to arrive in Kathmandu. And Dream Tibet Travel will take care of all the rest. You now too book for Saka Dawa June 18 2027 Tour with us.

What is the Saga Dawa Festival?

Saga Dawa is the holiest month on the Tibetan Buddhist calendar and occurs in the fourth lunar month. In the context of a Tibet pilgrimage, Saga Dawa marks three important events from Shakyamuni Buddha's life, birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana (the final liberation from physical form). Whether you join for the Saga Dawa Festival 2026 Date May 31 or plan ahead, this is the most spiritually charged window of the entire Tibetan year.

As a result of these significant associations with these dates, people believe that acts of generosity or spiritual practice in the month of Saga Dawa will generate much greater merit than during any other month. This holds true whether you travel for Saka Dawa June 18 2027 or any future year,  the spiritual weight of this month remains unchanged.

It is during this month that Tibetans create a unique atmosphere for the entire winter. You experience it as soon as you arrive at this special time and place. Those already looking at the Saga Dawa 2027 date will find the same sacred energy waiting for them.

From every corner of your world and from every corner of Tibet, there are pilgrims here this time. There are also pilgrims here on a Mount Kailash tour from Kathmandu, and from India, Mongolia and from around the world, many already planning their Mount Kailash pilgrimage 2027 after experiencing this journey once. The energy and diversity of this gathering are unmatched within humanity; it is a profound and quiet experience, all in one.

Why 2026 is Exceptionally Sacred (The Rare Horse Year)?

The Year of the Horse comes around every 12 years in Tibetan astrology. And according to ancient Buddhist tradition, completing the Kailash Kora during a Mount Kailash festival May 2026 creates merit equivalent to 13 ordinary Koras. That is not a small claim. So a circumambulation around Mount Kailash in 2026 holds the same spiritual significance as walking the Kora 13 times any other year.

This is why the Year of the Horse Kailash 2026 represents a peak pilgrimage season. There are elderly Tibetans who barely walk, but they do it. There are people who come from India, Nepal, and even further, just for this year. This is a true, breathing tradition and 2026 is that one.

If you have been contemplating the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Saga Dawa 2026, now is no better time to do it.The Tarboche Flagpole Ceremony at Mount Kailash

The Tarboche flagpole ceremony takes place at Tarboche, a sacred location just outside of Darchen and the very entry point of the Kailash Kora Trail. Lamas from the surrounding monastery, along with many local people, lower and then ceremonially raise a pole draped with thousands of fresh prayer flags.

As people gather around the ceremonial pole and pull on the rope to raise it, horns sound. The air fills with the smoky smell of juniper and the sounds of the Mani Mantras. Each pilgrim circumambulates the ceremonial pole, offers their white khata scarves and lights their butter lamps.

When the pole stands completely erect or tilts slightly toward Kailash, the people erupt. It's a moment forever etched in your memory, one of the most powerful scenes of any Kailash Kora during Saga Dawa. And right after that, the Kailash Kora begins.

The Kailash Kora, Sacred 53 km Circumambulation Around Mount Kailash

The Kailash Kora circumambulation is a 53 km circuit that circumnavigates Mount Kailash. It can be completed in three days. In Tibetan Buddhism, this is called a Kora. It means walking clockwise around a sacred object as an act of devotion. In Hinduism, it's called the Kailash Parikrama 53 km. But regardless of the name, walking around Mount Kailash is considered one of the most spiritually powerful things a person can do in their lifetime.

The circuit contains three different landscape types across three days. The first day takes you through the large flat valley of the Lha Chu River. The second day brings high snow-covered mountain areas and large boulder moraines below the Dolma La Pass. And the third day is a gentler descent through the Lham Chu valley. This three-day journey is the heart of every Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026 experience.

The highest and most holy point is the Dolma La Pass trek at 5,630m. A large boulder there bears witness to thousands of prayer flags left by pilgrims. So it's both a place to leave offerings and a stop to reflect. You'll feel the weight of all those who have stood there before you, one of the defining moments of any Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026.

No climbing experience is required. But you do need to be fairly fit, take your time and have great respect for the high altitude. If you'd like horse or porter support from the Darchen guesthouse Kailash area, help is always available making this Saga Dawa tour package 2026 genuinely accessible to pilgrims of all fitness levels.

Kora at a glance:

  • Day 1: Darchen to Dirapuk, covering a distance of 18 kilometers, takes about 7 to 8 hours and reaches an elevation of 4,800 meters.
  • Day 2: Dirapuk to Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters and then to Zuthulpuk, covering 19 kilometers in approximately 9 hours.
  • Day 3: Zuthulpuk to Darchen, covering 16 kilometers in about 3 hours.

Important Note

During the Kailash Kora, groups will be clustered based on walking speeds. Slower walkers will be at the back and quicker walkers at the front. But everyone will finish together. Your large luggage will remain in Darchen for the full three days of the Kora. So carry only a small bag with one outfit change and your daily necessities. Please pack your things in the duffel bag provided by Dream Tibet. Everyone will spend the evening before the Kora in Darchen.

Who Can Attend the Saga Dawa Festival at Mount Kailash?

All people are eligible to attend the festival, regardless of nationality or belief. In addition, all persons travelling to Tibet, prior to departure, must have obtained a valid Tibet Travel Permit and a China Group Visa. (Dream Tibet will handle this for all participants.) You must send your visa and travel permit application paperwork to Dream Tibet at least 20 calendar days prior to your date of departure.

The only other requirement for you to participate in the Kora is that you are physically fit for the altitude, as well as for the 3-day Kora hike. There is additional detailed information pertaining to this later in this manual. Why the Kailash Kora During Saga Dawa is Different from Any Other Time of Year

There are many opportunities to participate in the Kailash Kora throughout the year. But if you want to know how to do Kailash Kora during Saga Dawa at its most powerful, you must plan your visit for this sacred month.

Saga Dawa is a time when the trail surrounding Mount Kailash is occupied by hundreds of thousands of Tibetan pilgrims on their spiritual journey to purify their karma. Some pilgrims do full prostrations for every step along the 53km trail. And others are slower-moving elderly grandmothers. The energy of the trail created by thousands of people sharing this special journey can't be created outside of this time.

The electric atmosphere of being around thousands of people from around the world makes this Tibet pilgrimage tour Nepal journey even more powerful than it already is. And the only time to witness the impressive Tarboche flagpole ceremony before the start of the Kailash Kora is during Saga Dawa. Don't miss it.

And if you're there for the Kailash pilgrimage May 31 2026, a Horse Year, the energy will be doubled. There will be more pilgrims and greater levels of commitment. If you've ever thought about making this pilgrimage, 2026 is the year to do it.

How to Reach Mount Kailash for Saga Dawa (Route Options from Kathmandu)

Mount Kailash is reachable from Kathmandu via two principal terrestrial routes through the Tibetan Plateau. Choosing the right route is an important part of planning your 10-day Kailash Saga Dawa tour from Kathmandu.

Kyirong Border - The Classic Route

This route is the itinerary of the 10-day trek I took in 2009, commencing in Kathmandu. You travel north to the Kyirong border into Tibet, then via road across the Tibetan Plateau through Kyirong, Saga, Lake Mansarovar, and Mount Kailash.

The total journey (to and return from Mount Kailash) is four days and is a scenic and leisurely journey, allowing your body to gradually acclimatise to the altitude. The scenery is diverse, including high desert, nomadic camps, turquoise lakes, and mountain passes with views of the 8,000-metre peaks.

The Kyirong border Tibet tour is the most widely used option for the Saga Dawa festival tour and remains the preferred route for most pilgrims.

Travel to Lhasa and Then to Everest Base Camp

First, you must fly into Lhasa, Tibet's capital city. You'll spend time taking in sights such as the Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple. And you'll walk along Barkhor Street before driving west through Tibet towards Mount Kailash.

This gives you many opportunities to visit beautiful historic Tibetan towns and drive over high mountain passes. Plus you may witness the breathtaking view of Mount Everest from the Tibetan side at Everest Base Camp. You'll be glad you took this route.

It takes longer than the South Route. But it provides a wider range of Tibet experiences. So it's ideal if you're planning a Kailash tour June 2027 or a future departure and want a more culturally connected travel experience in Tibet.

If you're interested in travelling on the route from Lhasa or Everest Base Camp, get in touch with Dream Tibet Travel for more information regarding your chosen dates and budget.

Is the Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour Right for You?

This is a fair question that we would like to respond to in an equally honest manner.

The Kailash Saga Dawa pilgrimage is arguably one of the most life-changing / rewarding trips you will make during your lifetime; however, not everybody is able to complete the pilgrimage.  The altitude can be quite significant, and Kora is long by any standards.  In addition, Tibet is extremely remote from other developed geographic areas.

Before booking, please note the following points regarding physical readiness to make the Kailash Kora.

Physical Fitness Required for the Kailash Kora

You will not need to be an athlete in order to participate; however, you will need to possess a fair level of fitness.

The Kailash Kora takes approximately three days to complete, covering 53 km in total.  Out of the three days, the most challenging by far will be the second day, when you will need to ascend to Dolma La Pass (5630m), taking approximately 9 hours to walk.  There will not be any climbing or special gear required on the Kailash Kora as the trail is not technically challenging; however, the elevation will certainly complicate your trek vs. the same distance at sea level.

You should be walking 15 to 20 kilometres per day at normal elevation without difficulty. Then you'll be able to do the Kora without difficulty too.

For those who don't feel capable of completing the Kora independently, horse and porter support is accessible from Darchen on parts of the route. For the harder sections, many pilgrims use a horse to climb the Dolma La. You're not alone in doing this. And there's nothing wrong with using a horse during your pilgrimage.

Best Age and Health Conditions to Do the Kora

There's no age limit on the Kora. And Tibetan pilgrims in their 70s and 80s finish it every year.

But before booking this tour, consult your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions.

  • Heart or lung issues.
  • Very high blood pressure.
  • A prior history of severe altitude sickness.
  • A recent major illness or surgery.

Best Time to Book Mount Kailash for the Saga Dawa Festival Tour

If you'd like more confirmation that the Kora is right for your wellbeing, we'll be happy to give you an unbiased second opinion.

Off-Peak Season (October to March) - Not a Good Booking Window

  • Temperature: Very cold, well below -20°C at Dolma La Pass (5,630m).
  • Trail Conditions: Snow and ice cover the Kora trail; Dolma La Pass is frequently impassable.
  • Road Access: Snow and ice may close roads to the Kailash region.
  • Crowds: The trail is virtually empty. No pilgrims or tourists.
  • Best For: The regular Kailash Kora is not recommended. Only experienced high-altitude trekkers with specialist gear and experience in very cold conditions should consider this window.

Itinerary

This is a 10-day overland journey from Kathmandu through the Kyirong/Kerung border and into Tibet across the high-altitude Plateau. You'll visit Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash. The entire trip includes a three-day Kailash Kora circumambulation that coincides with the Saga Dawa Festival. All dates below are for the 2026 departure, May 26 to June 4. Don't wait to book. Spots are filling fast.

Trip PlanExpand all
Max Altitude: 2700 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Guest House.

You'll begin your Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour with a very early morning departure from Kathmandu. Don't hit the snooze button.

Travel goes through the beautiful Trishuli River valley. Then up the Aruniko Highway, the original trade route from Nepal into Tibet, the same gateway used by pilgrims on the Kailash Mansarovar tour Nepal for generations. There are breathtaking views along the way. Terraced farmland and dense forest lead you to the Nepal-Tibet border. And as you gain elevation, amazing gorges open up and the great views of high mountains begin.

Once you arrive at the Kerung border Tibet tour entry point and complete your immigration paperwork, you'll meet your Tibetan guide and driver. You'll also receive instructions regarding your travel. After processing, you'll travel to Kerung at 2,700m for your overnight stay. Kerung is a calm and friendly mountain town. It's ideally located as a first stop before continuing further into the high altitude region. You'll be glad of that gentle introduction.

Tip: Arrive at the border early. It ensures the immigration process goes smoothly. And make sure you have all necessary documents in hand while travelling. That includes your original passport, Tibet visa and photocopies of all permits. Don't leave any of those behind.

Max Altitude: 2700 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Guest House.

Acclimatisation is a must-do on your Kailash Pilgrimage. Kerung is at an altitude of 2,700 m, and your next destination, Saga Tibet overnight stop, is at 4,400 m, so having a rest day here will help your body make more red blood cells and adapt to the lower levels of oxygen at high altitude. The most common cause of getting altitude sickness on the Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026 is rushing this step.

Spend the morning resting, drinking plenty of fluids and eating light, healthy meals. In the afternoon, take a slow walk around Kerung's little town. The town has a nice market and a few small monasteries you can check out. The valley surrounding Kerung is beautiful and lush — a peaceful first taste of the landscape that makes every Saga Dawa Festival Tour from Kathmandu so unforgettable.

For altitude safety, make sure you drink at least 3 to 4 litres of water per day from now on; do not drink alcohol; take your time, do not overexert yourself; if you have any headaches or nausea that continue for a long time, tell your guide. These simple steps are what allow every traveller on a Mount Kailash Saga Dawa Tour 2026 to arrive at Tarboche strong and ready.

Max Altitude: 4400 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Guest House.

On your journey today from Kerung to Saga, you'll witness some of the most unforgettable scenery on your Tibet pilgrimage Saga Dawa journey. As you exit Kerung, the road begins to rise into an open semi-desert environment as far as your eyes can see. This is what many people envision when they think or dream of Tibet. Large, quiet and timelessly wonderful.

As you travel along your route, you'll observe nomadic camps with yaks and sheep grazing on the sparse grass of the highlands. And you'll see beautiful, large shimmering freshwater lakes that appear as mirages on the horizon. Created out of bright light shining off the water.

On clear days, if you're lucky, you may see three of the largest mountains in the world from various mountain passes. That includes Gaurishankar (7,134m), Shishapangma (8,027m, the only eight-thousand-metre mountain entirely within Tibet) and the Langtang Himal range from Nepal.

Along your journey to Saga, you'll pass through Khunmen Tso, Sinling and Karru Ongchen. Then comes one of the most stunning high-altitude lakes in Tibet. Peiku Tso at 4,400m, with mountains reflecting off its large surface, a reminder of why a Saga Dawa Festival Tour from Kathmandu is unlike any other journey in the world. You'll want to stop and take it all in.

As you approach Saga for the evening, you'll have crossed the huge Brahmaputra River, locally known as the Yarlung Tsangpo.

Max Altitude: 4500 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Guest House.

Leaving Saga, your long journey towards the holy site on this Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026 takes you through the small town of Zhongba and then through Paryang. Along this portion of your journey, the land is a wide-open plateau in all directions. But as you get close to your destination, you'll have one of the most magnificent views of Mount Kailash. A snow-covered pyramid glimmering in the sky above you. You'll feel it before you can even put it into words.

Then comes Lake Mansarovar, also known as Mapam Yumtso. On the northwest part of the lake sits an ancient monastery, Chiu Monastery, perched on a large rocky formation. The water in Lake Mansarovar ranges from bright blue to deep blue to emerald green depending on the time of day. You'll want to just sit and watch it change.

The Lake Mansarovar pilgrimage sits at an elevation of 4,590m, making it the highest freshwater source in the world and one of the most sacred for both Hindus and Buddhists. The lake is surrounded by the majestic Moun

Max Altitude: 4670 Meters Meals: BreakfBreakfastastAccommodation: Guest House.

Get up early before the sun rises. Watching the reflection of the beautiful snow-capped Gurla Mandhata (7,694m) in Lake Mansarovar at sunrise is one of the most stunning views in all of Tibet. And the first sunlight on the top of Mount Kailash to the north is breathtaking. You'll be glad you set that early alarm.

You may also want to spend some time quietly sitting by the lake on the shoreline. Breathing the thin, clean air. And enjoying the same ambiance that millions on this Buddhist festival Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage have experienced for thousands of years.

The Sacred Bathing in Lake Mansarovar is the final step of the Pilgrimage Ritual. It represents the washing away of the sins of a lifetime according to both Hindu and Buddhist tradition. It's a moment you won't forget.

Despite the frigid temperatures, pilgrims continue their journey into the waters. They believe the discomfort of being wet is nothing compared to the spiritual benefits they'll receive. On a morning like this, you'll understand why millions have done the same before you.

After leaving the water, you'll drive 40km to Darchen. It's the staging point for your Kailash Kora circumambulation and a place to settle into your guesthouse, rest and prepare your backpack for the three-day trek. You'll get a final briefing from your guide. Don't skip that briefing. It matters.

If you've decided to hire a porter or horses for the Kailash Kora, you can do that directly in Darchen. And if you're not sure about your ability to complete the full 53-kilometre trek, a horse for the steepest parts is also considered acceptable to the pilgrims.

Max Altitude: 4800 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Guest House.

Today is probably the highlight of the whole journey. And for many people, it'll be the highlight of their life. Whether they've seen other parts of the world or not.

Your trek begins at Tarboche, the ceremonial heart of the Saga Dawa Festival Tarboche ceremony 2026. Thousands of Tibetan pilgrims are gathered around the main ceremonial pole, adorned with countless multi-coloured prayer flags. Monks, nuns, nomadic families and elderly individuals who may be completing their last Kora. And young people doing prostrations over the full 53km of the Kora circuit. You'll feel the weight and the joy of it all at once.

The raising of the pole is led by a senior lama. And it's accompanied by the sound of long horns, cymbals and thousands of voices reciting the Mani mantra. You have the opportunity to join this group of pilgrims. Offer a khata, a white ceremonial scarf. Light butter lamps. And walk around the ceremonial pole before or after the ceremonies are complete.

It's an incredible cultural experience. And it embodies the spirit of human connection. A celebration of personal faith in physical form. You'll carry it with you long after you leave.

Following the ceremony, the Kailash Kora during Saga Dawa 2026 officially begins. Starting at the north of the Lha Chu (River of the Gods) valley, you'll have the black southern face of Kailash at 2,600 metres right over your head to the east. Sheer high walls of red and ochre rock tower above you. And waterfalls cascade from the walls of the mountain to your side as you walk along the river. Countless prayer flags hang above it. You'll want to stop and take it all in.

The total time for your hike to Dirapuk Guesthouse at 4,800 metres is approximately 7 to 8 hours. Dirapuk has the best and most traditional view of Mount Kailash's remarkable north face. And you'll want to step outside at any time during the night just to see it again. On a clear night, you'll be glad you did.

2026 Special Note: The main ceremony of Saga Dawa will be held at Tarboche on May 31, 2026. This event will occur on Day 6 of your trip dates beginning May 26, 2026.

Special Note for 2027: The annual main ceremony of Saga Dawa will take place at Tarboche on June 18, 2027. This takes place on Day 6 of your trip dates starting June 13, 2027.

Max Altitude: 4760 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Guest House.

The conquest of Dolma La Pass at 5,630m is the highest point of the Kora and a sacred milestone on every Kailash pilgrimage May 31 2026 departure. Today's journey includes an ascent through a moraine of boulders mixed with a stream leading to permanent snow from Dirapuk.

At this point in your pilgrimage, the height affects everything. Every step is heavier. Every breath seems deeper. And you'll be forced to go slower and at a steady pace. This is the moment that separates the Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026 from any ordinary trek, on a climb like this, you'll be glad you prepared those legs back home.

Countless pilgrims have left their offerings at Dolma La. Hair, teeth, clothing and photos of deceased loved ones. These offerings are examples of symbolic deaths and rebirths. They symbolise the liberation that the Kailash Kora circumambulation is intended to bring.

The view from Dolma La of the surrounding Himalayan mountains, lakes and the vast Tibetan Plateau is vast and lasting. It's a memory you'll carry for the rest of your life, and one of the reasons the Mount Kailash tour from Kathmandu draws pilgrims back again and again.

Just below Dolma La lies Gauri Kund (Tuje Chenpo), a sacred lake for Parvati. The route from Dolma La descends down steep cliffs into a canyon valley on the way there. Then comes Zuthulpuk Guesthouse at 4,760m. It's located near the campsite where Milarepa, the famous Tibetan poet-saint, is said to have spent time in meditation and performed miracles. Sit outside in the evening and look up at the southern face of Mount Kailash while you wait for the stars to come out, a moment of stillness that every Tibet pilgrimage Saga Dawa traveller carries home forever. You've successfully accomplished the most difficult portion of the journey. You'll be glad you pushed through.

But those with advanced AMS symptoms should not attempt to cross Dolma La. If you experience any type of sickness during your ascent, descend immediately. Your guide will be able to assist you. And remember, the only way across Dolma La is over or back. There's no shortcut across the pass, this is high-altitude reality on every Kailash Mansarovar tour Nepal journey. Don't attempt to find one.

Max Altitude: 4400 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Guest House.

The third and final day of the Kailash Kora is a gentle, celebratory descent. The 16 km trail from Zuthulpuk back to Darchen follows the Lham Chu valley southeast through open, airy terrain with wide views of the peaks surrounding the Kailash massif. Most walkers complete this section in two to three hours, a pleasantly unhurried ending to one of the world's great pilgrimages.

There is a profound sense of lightness on this final walking day. The Kora is complete. Whether you approached it as a Kailash Kora during Saga Dawa spiritual pilgrimage, a high-altitude trek, or simply a remarkable adventure, the experience of three days walking around one of the world's most sacred mountains during the holiest Buddhist festival of the year leaves a mark that does not fade.

After completing the Kora at Darchen, you load into your vehicle and begin the long drive back east toward Saga, retracing the plateau route through wide, open landscapes. Overnight in Saga.

Max Altitude: 2700 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Guest House.

Day 9 consists of a journey through the breathtaking landscape of Tibet. You'll leave Saga and drive back to Kerung via the same route travelled on Day 3. But the scenery will feel more apparent this time, one of the unexpected gifts of a Tibet group visa from Kathmandu tour is how differently you see the land on the return. The road will gradually incline from the plateau to the border zone. And the lower you go, the lower the vegetation will be.

Your next stop is the town of Kerung, time permitting. You'll have time for last-minute shopping and taking in the sights around town. And dinner with your group will be the last time spent in Tibet. It's an ideal time for reflection on the entire trip. Exchange emails or social media information with other pilgrims. And pick up any last-minute gifts or souvenirs. Thangkas, prayer flags or singing bowls would make fantastic memorabilia. You'll be glad you grabbed them before crossing the border.

Max Altitude: 1350 Meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Hotel

Immigration procedures will be completed on the China side of the Kyirong border crossing before returning to Nepal. Then you descend quickly from the high elevation open space of Tibet to the humid subtropical forests and river valleys below. The contrast at this point is overwhelming, as it is for every traveller completing the Saga Dawa Festival Tour from Kathmandu. After ten days above 4,000m, the warmth and greenery will hit you like a wave.

The drive out of Kyirong takes you down through Syabrubesi and past many restaurants in the Langtang area before working your way back up into Kathmandu. Your tour finishes when you arrive and drop off at your hotel. The city, with its variety of colours, sounds and warmth, will feel familiar. But quite different from what you experienced before leaving. You'll see it through new eyes.

Post-tour tip: You should plan to stay at least one full day in Kathmandu before flying. The rapid change in altitude from 4,000m to 1,350m is significant. And it may take 24 to 48 hours to recover after you arrive at your hotel. Don't rush that process. Your body has earned the rest.

Porter Support on the Kailash Kora

Rate per day for a porter: $70

Porters will carry your belongings on the Kora. So you can remove the burden of a heavy pack and focus on walking. At altitude and over long kilometres, that's the best use of your energy. You'll be glad of that support on the climb up Dolma La on Day 2 of the Kora.

Porters can be hired at Darchen on the morning of Day 1. But contact us beforehand and we'll arrange it for you.

Essential Information

Altitude and Acclimatization About Staying Safe on the Kailash Pilgrimage

Respect the altitude of Mount Kailash at 6,638m. The Kailash Kora reaches a maximum altitude of 5,630m at Dolma La Pass. But respect here doesn't mean reverence for a mountain. It means preparation and awareness, something every traveller on a Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026 must take seriously from day one.

The good news is that this 10-day Kailash Saga Dawa tour from Kathmandu takes acclimatisation fully into account. Your Day 2 rest day at Kerung at 2,700m is actually one of the most important days of the entire trip. It's the first opportunity for your body to start adjusting to the altitude before the long drive to Saga at 4,400m on Day 3. You'll be glad that day is built in.

Below is an altitude profile for the places we'll visit during your trip.

Altitude profile:

  • Kathmandu: 1,350 m
  • Kerung (Days 1–2): 2,700 m
  • Saga (Days 3 & 8): 4,400 m
  • Lake Mansarovar (Day 4): 4,590 m
  • Darchen (Day 5): 4,670 m
  • Dirapuk (Day 6): 4,800 m
  • Dolma La Pass (Day 7): 5,630 m

Basic altitude rules to follow from Day 1

  • Drink 3 to 4 litres of water each day.
  • Take it slowly. There's no gain in rushing at altitude.
  • Eat light and don't consume any alcohol.
  • If you experience any continuing headache, nausea or difficulty catching your breath, contact your guide right away.
  • Discuss taking Diamox with your doctor prior to travelling.

Altitude sickness can occur to anyone at any age or fitness level. So don't assume you're immune. Our Tibetan guides have been trained in high-altitude first aid and will have supplemental oxygen when trekking the Kailash Kora during Saga Dawa 2026. A travel insurance policy that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation is highly recommended. Don't skip that step.

Tibet Travel Permit and Visa Requirements for the Kailash Tour

To travel to Mount Kailash, all travellers need two travel documents. A Chinese group visa and a Tibet Travel Permit 2026 (TTP). You can't apply for these directly. They must be processed through a licensed travel company in Tibet. And Dream Tibet Travel will assist you in completing this paperwork.

Required Documents for Your Visa

Please email the following documents to us at least 20 days before your intended departure, this applies whether you're joining a Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026 or any other departure window. Here's what you'll need.

  • A clear colour scan of your passport. The biographical data page must be visible and the passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your travel dates.
  • Your original passport is required for your application to the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. You'll need to leave it with us for 3 to 4 working days.
  • A passport photograph with a white background. Front view showing both ears. And no glasses or smile.
  • A completed visa application form. We'll provide this to you. But all fields must be filled in before you submit it to apply for your group visa to China.

How to Process Your Tibet Visa in Kathmandu?

The Chinese Embassy in Nepal currently requires a minimum of 5 people to process a Tibet group visa from Kathmandu. It usually takes 3 to 4 official working days to process your application. And you, along with all members of your group, must visit the China Visa Application Centre in Kathmandu in person to provide your biometric data. That includes fingerprints and a photo.

If your group is smaller than 5, don't worry. Dream Tibet Travel will arrange for you to be part of a compatible group to meet the minimum requirement. So you can still keep the privacy of your Kailash Saga Dawa Festival Tour 2026 experience.

Visa rules change often. And Dream Tibet Travel monitors all updates provided by the Chinese Embassy. They'll communicate current requirements to you at the time of booking. So confirm the latest visa requirements directly with Dream Tibet Travel before you travel on your Tibet pilgrimage tour Saga Dawa 2026. Don't assume the rules haven't changed.

Detecting and Preventing Altitude Sickness (AMS)

Altitude Sickness (AMS) is a condition that can affect anyone at any age or level of fitness. The most frequent symptoms are a continuous headache, nausea, dizziness, lack of appetite and difficulty sleeping. Symptoms of AMS are common at altitude. But they'll usually improve with adequate rest and hydration. This is true for every traveller joining a Saga Dawa Festival Tour from Kathmandu.

If symptoms worsen, especially if confusion, lack of coordination or a continual wet cough occurs, it generally indicates either High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). Both are significant emergencies. And both require you to descend immediately. Don't wait.

General tips for preventing altitude sickness

  • Drink water continually. At least 3 to 4 litres daily.
  • Ascend slowly. Don't gain more than 500m of sleeping altitude in a day above 3,000m. Eat light meals composed of carbohydrates. Stay clear of alcoholic beverages and sleeping pills. They may restrict breathing.
  • Speak to your doctor regarding the use of Diamox (acetazolamide). It's used to speed up the acclimatisation process.

Your Dream Tibet tour leader will have supplementary oxygen and a primary first-aid kit while completing the Kailash Kora during Saga Dawa. And Dream Tibet Travel highly recommends purchasing comprehensive travel insurance. It must cover high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation. Helicopter rescue from the Kailash region is possible. But it'll be costly without insurance. Don't cut corners on this.

Accommodation on the Kailash Saga Dawa Tour

The accommodations in Tibet are local guesthouses. They're clean, basic and simple in nature. Each will likely have only a bed, blankets and a shared bathroom. Don't expect luxury. But do expect a warm and safe place to rest after each day on your Mount Kailash Saga Dawa Tour 2026.

The guesthouses in Kerung and Saga are the most comfortable compared to those closer to Mount Kailash. And the basic Darchen guesthouse Kailash area accommodation will give you good sleep after long days of walking. At altitude, rest is everything. You'll be glad of every hour you get.

You'll be responsible for all room bookings before and after the tour in Kathmandu. There's no accommodation cost included for Kathmandu. Dream Tibet Travel will supply you with a duffle bag for the trip. So leave your suitcase at your hotel in Kathmandu and take only those items necessary for your 10-day stay.

Meals Included on the Tour

Breakfast is provided daily throughout the entire 10-day tour. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense. But there are plenty of local teahouses and guesthouses along the entire route. You won't go hungry.

The food in Tibet is relatively simple and filling. Typical items include:

  • Tsampa (roasted barley)
  • Thukpa (noodle soup)
  • Momos (dumplings)
  • Rice
  • Dal
  • Eggs

There'll be a bit more variety in Kerung and Saga. But at the Kailash Kora guesthouses, the food will be basic and satisfactory. Plan to budget approximately $10 to $20 USD per day for your meals.

And for the long driving days and the Kora, it's good to have some snacks on hand. Energy bars, nuts and chocolate will all be very helpful. On tough days at altitude during your Saga Dawa tour package 2026, you'll be glad you packed them.

What Currency Do I Need in Tibet?

The only currency used for trade in Tibet is the Chinese Yuan, referred to as RMB or Renminbi. Once you've crossed the border into Tibet from Nepal via Kyirong, you can't use Nepali Rupees. So exchange your currency for Chinese Yuan at one of the reliable money changers in Thamel before leaving Kathmandu on your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Saga Dawa 2026 journey. And bring some USD cash as an emergency backup.

Credit or debit cards won't work at guesthouses, teahouses or local shops along the Kailash circuit. These establishments only accept cash. Don't assume otherwise.

So make sure you have enough cash to cover all meal-related costs and personal expenses. Plus any portage costs such as hiring a horse or porter. And souvenirs. This needs to cover the entire 10-day visit to Tibet. Plan carefully and don't leave yourself short. At this distance from a bank, you won't have any other options.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for the Kailash Tour?

Yes. And it's not optional. You must have a valid travel insurance policy that covers trekking at high altitude above 5,000m. And it must include emergency evacuation from a remote location via helicopter. This is not automatically included in standard travel accident policies.

So verify before purchasing. Without the right coverage, helicopter evacuation could cost you up to USD $10,000. And medical treatment at high altitude is expensive and limited. This applies to every Tibet pilgrimage Saga Dawa traveller without exception.

Make sure you've purchased travel insurance before departing from your own country. Don't leave it until you arrive in Kathmandu. If you need assistance selecting a policy based on your country of travel, don't hesitate to ask us. We're happy to help.

Customise the Kailash Saga Dawa Itinerary

Yes! The example itinerary and dates you see here are our regular scheduled group options. Fixed date group tours using shared transportation and group accommodation at guesthouses. But that doesn't mean there aren't many other ways to do this Saga Dawa Festival 2026 date May 31 departure or any future year.

Dream Tibet Travel can put together a complete and unique private trek based around your own schedule. Travel at your own pace and do the activities of your own preference. Want additional days at Lake Mansarovar? No problem. Or perhaps you'd like a Lhasa cultural tour or a stop at Everest Base Camp on the way?

We can do that too. Have multiple family members or a large corporate group for this pilgrimage? We regularly provide customized solutions for larger groups. So whatever your requirements, get in touch. Share your needs with us and we'll provide a detailed custom itinerary and quote within 24 hours. Don't settle for someone else's schedule when you can have your own. Below are some of the alternative package you can choose for Kailash Mansarovar Yatras:

What Should I Wear on the Kailash Kora?

While driving to the Kora, wear comfortable and casual clothing. You'll be sitting in a car. So you don't need full trekking gear.

For the 3 days on the Kora:

  • Base Layer: You need moisture-wicking base layers. Don't use cotton. It holds moisture and gets cold fast at high elevation.
  • Mid Layer: Warm fleece or down for your mid-layer. It'll be your most important layer on the Kora. Don't underestimate it.
  • Outer Layer: Windproof and waterproof. The weather changes rapidly on the Tibetan Plateau. So don't get caught without it.
  • Trekking Pants: Quick-drying pants. Jeans are heavy, slow to dry and uncomfortable at high altitude.
  • Trekking Boots: Good and sturdy boots with ankle support. And make sure they're already broken in. New boots on the Kora will destroy your feet by Day 2. Don't do it.
  • Trekking Poles: Bring a set if possible. They're very helpful coming down the steep parts, especially from the Dolma La Pass trek. You'll be glad you packed them.
  • Warm Hat and Gloves: Even in June, you'll want these for early mornings and high altitudes. On cold mornings at this elevation, you'll be very glad you packed them.

Where to Buy?

All items on your packing list are available in the Thamel area of Kathmandu. You can buy or rent good quality gear at reasonable prices. When you book with us, we'll send you a complete packing list to help get you prepared for your Mount Kailash tour Horse Year 2026 trek.

FAQs

Saga Dawa 2026: 31 May 2026. Saga Dawa 2027: 18 June 2027. Saga Dawa 2028: 7 June 2028. The date varies from year to year, since it lands on the full moon of the fourth month in the Tibetan lunar calendar and doesn't correspond to fixed dates in the Gregorian calendar.

2026 will mark the Kailash Kora Horse Year 2026, a cycle that repeats only once every 12 years. It's believed that completing the Kora in a Horse Year generates merit equivalent to 13 circuits. The confirmed dates create a uniquely auspicious window for the Kailash pilgrimage, specifically for devout Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims. It's the most monumental Saga Dawa in a generation.

At Kailash, the Saga Dawa Festival Tarboche ceremony is the centrepiece of the entire Buddhist festival Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage. From across Tibet and the world, lamas, monks and pilgrims lower and then ceremoniously re-erect a tall prayer-flag pole. New prayer flags are hung before being raised. Pilgrims walk around the pole, chant mantras, present khata scarves and light butter lamps. When raised, the angle of the pole is seen as an omen. Straight up or tilting toward Kailash bodes well. The whole ceremony takes 2 to 4 hours, after which the Kailash Kora begins.

The biggest challenge of the Kailash Kora is altitude. It's not terrain. The trail itself is a well-beaten pilgrim path. It's not technical climbing. On Day 2 of the Kora, the steep 5 to 6 hour trek to Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m is perhaps the hardest portion. You should be fit enough to walk 15 to 20 km per day at low altitude with a daypack. Horse and porter hire is available at Darchen for those requiring assistance.

Yes. Although our published departure is a group-join of 2 to 20 people, Dream Tibet Travel can organize completely private Saga Dawa tour package 2026 experiences based on your timeframe, pace and preferred comfort level. Private tours have different pricing. Get in touch with us to talk about your needs.

The Chinese Embassy in Nepal presently issues a Tibet Group Visa for a minimum of 5 persons. If your party is smaller, Dream Tibet Travel will coordinate with you to find compatible groups, helping meet the visa requirement while keeping your experience separate and catered just for you.

Yes, if you prepare the right way. No trek or mountaineering experience is required. All you need is average fitness, a willingness to hike 15 to 20 km daily, and respect for the altitude. In Kerung, a rest day on Day 2 and the gradual altitude increase across Days 3 and 4 are built into the itinerary precisely to help first-time high-altitude travellers acclimatise safely. On the Kailash Kora, horse and porter support is available for anyone who needs it.

The tour reaches one high point at Dolma La Pass, 5,630 m, on Day 7 of the itinerary. That's the second day of the Kailash Kora. That's higher than Base Camp on the Nepal side of Everest. The altitude profile is gentle, starting at 1,350 m in Kathmandu and gradually gaining altitude over four days until you reach the Kailash Kora circuit.

Previous trekking experience isn't necessary. Every year, thousands of elderly Tibetan pilgrims with no trekking background complete the Kailash Kora. What counts is basic fitness, a slow and steady pace, and respect for the altitude. If you're comfortable walking for a couple of hours a day at sea level, you'll be able to do the Kora with the right training and headspace.

Book 3 to 4 months in advance at minimum. Book earlier for 2026 due to Horse Year demand. Tibet Travel permits need your paperwork at least 20 days before departure. Don't take this lightly, as Saga Dawa departures fill fast. Guided departures for the Mount Kailash Saga Dawa Tour 2026 are very limited. Plus, bookings for the Mount Kailash pilgrimage 2027 early interest list are already available.
