Bhutan's Entry Requirements and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

Getting to Bhutan has been made easier by getting our tour planned through a registered Bhutanese tour operator. Visas for almost all international guests and entry permits for Indian nationals need to be arranged for visits to Bhutan.

In Bhutan, the Bhutan government also has implemented Sustainable Development Fee(SDF) to assist in the conservation of the environment and culture, provide basic health and education and sustain tourism development all around the Kingdom of Bhutan.

All international guests pay a sustainable fee of USD 100 per person per day, and USD40 for one time application of visa. You can either apply for a visa directly through the official website of the ministry or let our assigned tour operator arrange it on your behalf.

Booking Flights to Bhutan: Paro International Airport Entry

Which Airport Should You Fly Into to Enter Bhutan?

Paro International Airport is Bhutan’s sole international airport. All tourists entering Bhutan via air arrive and depart from Paro. The airport is located around 6 kilometers away from the town of Paro and about 50 km away from the town of Thimpu. Due to its location within the Himalayan mountain range, it is among the most beautiful and challenging airports to land in.

Which Airlines Have Regular Flights to Paro International Airport?

At present, only two airlines operate flights to Bhutan. The airlines include the following:

  • Drukair

  • Bhutan Airlines

Paro Airport is connected to most major cities in Southeast Asia and South Asia through these two airlines. Spring and Autumn are peak travel times for the area, so purchase your tickets much sooner.

Which Airports Connect to Bhutan Directly?

Depending on the time of the year and the flight schedule, you can reach Bhutan from the following airports:

  • Kathmandu, Nepal

  • Delhi, India

  • Kolkata, India

  • Guwahati, India

  • Bagdogra, India

  • Bangkok, Thailand

  • Singapore (via Guwahati by certain airlines)

  • Dubai, UAE (by certain airlines)

Why Are Most Tours to Bhutan Starting from Kathmandu?

Kathmandu has become the most common place to start the journey due to daily flights, manageable flying time, or magnificent views of the Himalayas in the flight. If the weather is good, one can enjoy the views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga from the airplane.

When to Book Your Bhutan Flight?

Because the number of flights to Bhutan is very limited due to only a few flights offered, booking one’s tickets well in advance is strongly recommended. The best time to do so is about 2 to 4 months in advance for a smooth approval of one’s visa and smooth organization of the trip. You don't have to worry because all your flight tickets to Bhutan will be arranged from our Dream Tibet and Travels team.

How to Manage Money and Currency Exchange in Bhutan?

Managing money in Bhutan isn’t so tricky when you know how it works and plan accordingly. While digital payments and card facilities are gaining some ground in Bhutan, having some local cash in your pocket will undoubtedly make your travel a little easier, especially in remote areas. Simply take a look at the few easy points below:

Step 1: Know Bhutan's Official Currency

  • Bhutan's official currency is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN/Nu.).

  • The Ngultrum is pegged 1:1 with the Indian Rupee (INR).

  • Indian Rupees are widely accepted in Bhutan, except for certain denominations due to regulations.

Step 2: Carry Some Cash Before You Travel

  • Carry Dollars, Euros or Indian Rupees to exchange in case needed.

  • Always use small as well as big Notes to manage everything Easily. Make sure that You have sufficient amount of Cash with you For Shopping, Snacking & Personal Shopping.

Step 3: Exchange Money After Arriving in Bhutan

  • You can exchange foreign currency at:

  • Paro International Airport

  • Banks in Paro and Thimphu

  • Authorized currency exchange counters

  • Some larger hotels

Step 4: Use ATMs When Needed

  • You can use your International Visa and Mastercard debit card at many ATMs.

  • You’ll mostly find ATMs in Paro, Thimphu and other larger towns.

  • Withdraw sufficient cash from banks if you plan to travel into rural areas where ATMs may not be available.

Step 5: Using a Card or a Digital Wallet

  • Credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted by large hotels, restaurants and larger retailers.

  • The number of places accepting cards is lower in rural areas.

  • Users can also be part of regional digital wallets, which requires a local SIM, where GoBoB and MyPay can be utilized.

Step 6: Use cash for small value items

Have local cash for:

  • Souvenirs

  • Small cafés

  • Street shops

  • Local markets

  • Money for tips for guides and drivers

Step 7: Spend the Ngultrums before leaving

Normally, Bhutanese Ngultrum cannot be exchanged for cash outside the country. So, it is better to spend some cash before leaving the country, rather than waiting to do the exchange.

Step 8: Recommendations for managing money in Bhutan

  • It is recommended that you carry both cash and cards.

  • Notifying your bank prior to making a trip is important.

  • Emergency cash should not be stored with the wallet.

  • Do not rely only on ATMs or card points in remote locations.

Staying Connected: SIM Cards and Internet Access in Bhutan

You will find it quite easy to remain in touch in Bhutan during the majority of your holiday. Nearly every 3 star, 4 star or 5-star hotel features free internet for you to reply to emails, update your Facebook status and keep in touch with loved ones! Internet speeds vary, though!

To get a reliable and convenient connection, it is a must to buy a local tourist SIM card when in Bhutan. There are 2 local providers in Bhutan: Bhutan Telecom (B-Mobile) and TashiCell.

You can buy a tourist SIM at Paro International Airport, the local centres, or local licensed shops with a copy of your passport. Both offer prepaid plans which include call & data service (4G), and if your phone supports eSIMs are available.

Your mobile network service will be fine in places like Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Phuentsholing and so on. However, due to the mountain terrain, the signal may drop sometimes in remote areas, or there could be network outages.

Why Choose 5-Star Luxury Accommodation in Bhutan Instead of 3-Star or 4-Star Hotels?

The 3-star and 4-star Hotels are comfortable to stay in, and they will be certified by the government of Bhutan. You should prefer a 5-star Luxury hotel for your Bhutan tour for more luxury, privacy and personal service.

These exquisite luxury suites are complemented by stunning Himalayan or valley views, superb gourmet cuisine, internationally designed spas, heated rooms, landscaped gardens and an unparalleled standard of Bhutanese service.

These unique retreats offer a harmonious marriage of traditional Bhutanese design and contemporary opulence, and the likes of Six Senses, COMO Uma, Amankora and Taj hotels are all leaders in luxury, embracing Bhutan's traditions and values at the highest international level.

On the other hand, 3-star hotels offer decent, comfortable accommodation with a limited selection of facilities, which would be fine for the value-for-money travellers. The 4-star ones have larger rooms with enhanced amenities and greater levels of service, balancing comfort and cost.

Generally, they will lack those unique experiences, spa facilities or personal touch you can find at Bhutanese Luxury resorts. All the hotels selected for our Luxury Bhutan Cultural Tour are 5-star, promising a luxurious stay at all stages of your trip, from hospitality to comforting accommodation and an unforgettable Bhutan experience.

Why Do We Use Licensed Bhutanese Guides (and Local Certification Standards)?

At Dream Tibet Travel and Tours, we understand that your trip to the Himalayas is only as good as your guide. In Bhutan, all guides are government-licensed and have gone through intense and certified training at government-run institutions on history, culture, Buddhism, first aid, and hospitality.

We only employ licensed locals for the reason that they're more than an escort, they’re ‘travel ambassadors’. The purpose you’ll be touring will give guests insight into the area's history and culture, and they'll make the gap.

Licensed native tour information can organise your ‘local issues’, get the guides within the complex terrain mountains with the background details necessary to grasp a monument with its religious significance.

FAQs

We provide a fully managed white-glove service with exclusive secluded accommodations at some of the best luxury properties (Amankora & Six Senses), private luxury transportations, a personal expert guide who will accompany you all day every day on our amazing journey and finally the itinerary that’s designed specifically for you to suit your unique needs.

In the end, it’s about your own preference – go for Amankora if you want a more traditional experience with Bhutanese Architecture, cultural Immersion & Secluded Seclusion. Go with Six Senses if you have an appreciation for state-of-the-art health centres, luxurious treatments and a cohesive design aesthetic spanning across valleys.

Yes. Dream Tibet Travel and Tours will manage all visa applications and SDF fees (a payment of $100 per night for a sustainable development fee). Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, your Bhutanese visa will be obtained with ease.

A private, luxury vehicle, together with one professional government-approved guide, will accompany you throughout your trip. The guide will manage all transfers within and between valleys, obtain any checkpoint permits and ensure your comfort and privacy.

The general rule of thumb is that while in Bhutan, as with any religious structure, one must be respectfully and conservatively dressed. Long pants/skirts of knee length, together with an adequately covering top that covers the shoulder, are required. If visiting a temple, you may be required to remove headwear and sunglasses.

Our itineraries are designed with acclimatisation built in. Monitoring and hydration strategies are employed, and levels of physical activity are adjusted to your physical response at high altitudes.

Yes, this is what we do. If your priorities include wellness, photography, meditation, or unique private cultural events, every single day of your trip will be customized just for you.

It’s always great if you can leave some money to be split among those who served you – it’s a formality here. It’s up to you how much you want to spend; we’ll guide you on that depending on how long your trip was and what kind of service you received.

According to the Law of Bhutan (excluding the citizens of Maldives, Bangladesh and India), all foreigners require a licensed guide wherever they travel throughout the country. Booking with us allows you to meet our exclusive network of luxury partners while enjoying expert guidance on your adventures.

While by no means essential, it's always a thoughtful gesture. When travelling in Bhutan, a good rule of thumb is to offer gifts that can be practical, such as tea, sweets or small decorations. If you wish to thank your Dream Tibet tour leader/guide with something other than a standard tip, they will be delighted to offer some suggestions during your trip.
