A Bhutan tourist visa allows an American visitor to stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days from the date of entry. The 90 days is therefore calculated from your actual arrival in Bhutan, not simply from the date you submitted your visa application.

For example, if you enter Bhutan on September 10, your initial tourist stay can be extended for up to 90 days from that entry date, subject to the conditions of your visa.

Online Visa Extension Before the Original Visa Expires

You may wish to extend your stay (and who wouldn't in Bhutan?) and may apply for an extension during your stay, prior to your existing visa expiring.

You can apply for the extension using the Bhutan Online Visa Application Portal for the original visa application with your original login credentials. You are required to pay an extension fee along with the relevant SDF applicable for your number of extra nights directly through the system.

As of 2026, you no longer need a stamp to extend or avail visa service; there is a whole new automated system in place! You have to log on to immi.gov.bt to get your visas extended. There's no need to visit an immigration office or bring your passport for the service, either.

Visa Extension While Already in Bhutan

If you decide that you want to stay longer, you do not need to leave Bhutan to ask for an extension. Bhutan allows visitors already there to extend their stay, but it has to be before the original visa runs out.

There is one important detail about the way it says it in the official FAQ. While it says in the general FAQ that extensions should happen through the online visa portal, it also says that guests already in Bhutan have to apply in person at the Department of Immigration and pay in US dollars.

An American citizen already in Bhutan making an extension request should double-check with the Immigration Department to make sure the process is still this way before relying only on an online request.

Bhutan Visa Extension Cost for Americans

The extension has two separate cost components:

1. Visa extension processing fee: Under the existing regulations, extensions cost Nu. 2,000 for up to 3 months, Nu. 3,000 for up to 6 months and Nu. 5,000 for up to 1 year.
2. Additional SDF: US citizens would also have to pay the usual US$100 for every night on a separate tour.

For example, if an American extends a stay by 7 additional nights, the additional SDF would be:

7 × US$100 = US$700

Then, based on the applicable category, the visa-extension processing fee would be added.

Additional SDF for the Extended Stay

Those extending their tourist visa with an intention of staying for a few more nights also need to pay the Sustainable Development Fee for those additional nights. As per Bhutan Tourism, one needs to pay the SDF for the extended stay when they extend their tour with paying.

At US$100 per night, an American with an adult ticket would be adding 10 days to their trip:

10 × US$100 = US$1,000 additional SDF

The visa-extension processing charge is separate.

Apply Before Your Existing Visa Expires

Most important: don't let that 90-day allowance expire. As per immigration guidelines, Bhutan directs that a foreigner must process the extension before their visa/permit expires.

So, if an American wants to remain longer, the safest sequence is:

Check visa expiry to request extension before expiry to pay extension fee to pay additional SDF to receive confirmation/extension to continue your stay legally.

Americans Can Extend Their Bhutan Trip Without Leaving the Country

The answer is yes: an American tourist can extend their stay in Bhutan while already in the country. This means that a person does not absolutely have to leave after the initial period of their visa.

However, it is crucial to note that visa extension requires the permission of Bhutanese immigration officials. Thus, tourists should ensure that they complete the relevant procedures and payments prior to the expiration of their initial visa period.

It is also important to note that Bhutan’s immigration policies and online procedures are subject to change.

As such, Americans considering an initial long-stay visa should contact the Department of Immigration to confirm the exact procedure and method of payment that they will be using to extend their visa, prior to the day their visa expires.

How Do Americans Fly to Bhutan From the United States?

There aren't any direct flights from America to Bhutan. In fact, you have to book separate flights from somewhere on the West side to some East Asian hub then to somewhere in the Middle East and get into one connection into PBH (Paro International Airport), Bhutan's only international airport. Currently Drukair flies from other cities around India(Kolkata, Dehi) Bangkok, Nepal(Kathmandu) and Singapore, Dubai etc.

You can start your trip to Bhutan from just about any large airport in America, but your best choices to get to international flight departure centers are usually:

If you're traveling to either of those destinations from San Francisco, the general West Coast figure of about US$1,500 – US$2,400 round-trip still largely holds as a budgeting metric. If you spot a particularly attractive trans-Pacific ticket out of SFO, this might even become a cheaper option - especially when considering Singapore and Bangkok's potential hub status.

Chicago and Other U.S. Cities

Anyone coming to Bhutan from a city such as Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, Boston, D.C. Or any other in the US will typically have an extra layover on their way to a regional entry to the Kingdom.

So in other words, the price you end up paying can really vary depending on whether or not you fly into another US gateway city:

• Chicago to Delhi to Paro or Boston to New York/European or Asian hub to Delhi to Paro can involve more flight segments than a journey beginning in New York or Los Angeles.

Cheapest Gateway to Bhutan From the USA

It's tricky to pinpoint a site that's consistently cheapest, as flight prices vary by the time of year, demand, promotions offered by airlines and availability.

For Americans, it is worth comparing:

• Delhi: Often attractive for East Coast travelers.
• Kathmandu: Excellent if combining Nepal and Bhutan.
• Bangkok: Useful for West Coast travelers and Southeast Asia combinations.

The final regional flight to the capital is only part of the fare from the U.S. to Bhutan.

According to published fares from Drukair, the official airline, economy class round-trip refund-fare examples include the U.S. to Paro for about US_$$175 for Paro–Kathmandu, US$293, while the same class ticket from Paro to Delhi would cost about US_$$416 for Paro–Bangkok and US$488, before adding in the hefty round-trip fare from the U.S. to Asia, plus taxes and other charges.

So, a cheap ticket from the U.S. to Asia doesn't necessarily mean a cheap trip to Bhutan, since you have to add the cost of the Asia-to-Paro leg.
