Kailash Mansarovar Tour Via Simikot Trip Briefing

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Simikot is definitely one of the most spiritually rewarding and visually eye-popping pilgrimage journeys in the Himalayas. This path is known for the combination of the different factors of adventure, culture, and devotion. This leads the pilgrims deep into the far and beautiful areas of western Nepal, and then further on the journey, they transfer into Tibet.

Usually, the Kailash tour package From Simikot Pilgrimage starts with a plane trip from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Then, a connecting flight to Simikot follows, which is a remote small town located 2,910 meters above sea level.

Simikot is the entry point to the Humla area, where hikers take a wonderful journey across valleys covered in fertile greenery, floral alpine meadows, and mountain villages that are traditional in character.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Via Nepalgunj trail reveals a never-fading image of the snow-white mountains. It, too, gives an almost unexpected insight into the life of the people who are living in this sparsely populated district of the country.

After several days of trekking, the trail ends at the border crossing at Hilsa, from where pilgrims go into Tibet. The terrain gradually changed completely when you were closer to the holy Lake Mansarovar, a blue lake. It is the source of the three religions - Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

The most memorable part of the Nepalgunj Simikot to Mount Kailash Tour 19 days is the circumambulation (parikrama) of Mount Kailash. This is regarded as the spiritual center of the universe.

The trek around Kailash can be described as a very hard and deeply fulfilling experience. The devotees pass many high mountain passes and bumpy road conditions. During the whole time, they are in a worship and adoration atmosphere.

Despite all the difficulties, the Kailash Yatra Package 19 Days is still an experience that is unforgettable. Whether it is due to spiritual significance, natural scene, or the fact that you reached the utmost point of the Earth, for a customized Kailash Parvat yatra Itinerary in 2025 and 2026, fill in your contact details on the contact page, and we shall answer you with further information.

You can also align your departure dates to reach Kailash during Saga Dawa Festival which will be held on May 31st, 2026.

June 2025, 2026

The June departures are especially interesting because of the Saga Dawa Festival, an important religious time taking place in Tibet. You will be able to arrive on June 2, make the application on June 3, and have a departure trip on June 6 during the festival.

Another option is to arrive June 17, visa application June 18, and leave June 21 - again during the festival. Dream Tibet Travel, which arranges the Kailash Yatra, will often create special experiences connected to the festival that really enhance the overall experience of the Yatra. In 2026 Saga Dawa Festival falls in May.

July 2025, 2026

July also has last-minute departures available. In such instances, a person comes to Kathmandu on July 1, submits a visa application on the 2nd, and leaves on the 5th. Another window for leaving is to come on July 29, apply for the visa on the 30th, and go on to Mt. Kailash on August 2.

August 2025, 2026

The August 2nd departure is the most prominent one, which is closely related to dates in late July and early August. Those who reach the end of July and the beginning of August should foresee the marvelous green nature and, quite interestingly, the smaller number of fellow travelers on the route.

The last-minute bookings can be done by Dream Tibet Travel, and they manage the off-road ride from Nepalgunj to Simikot and also get all the required permits.

September 2025, 2026

The trip to Kailash Yatra is great in September, and the schedule of the departure includes August 31 (arrival), September 1 (visa), and September 4 (departure). One more range is September 16 (arrival), September 17 (visa), and September 20 (departure).

October 2025, 2026

October has late-season departures, with an arrival on September 29, a visa on September 30, and a departure on October 3. At this time of year, it is pleasantly crisp, clear skies, and the ideal temperature for trekking and taking part in a spiritual ceremony around Mt. Kailash.

The atmosphere and beauty of the city, with ancient buildings of architecture built into the mountains, will be a wonderful start to your incredible travel journey.

Max Altitude: 150m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Hotel

It will be an early start to your day as you transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your short flight to Nepalgunj. From above, you will have great views of the beautiful Himalayan foothills and the stunning patchwork of agriculture below. When you arrive, you will certainly feel the transition from the cool hills of Kathmandu to the warmer subtropical plains.

Nepalgunj has the lively atmosphere of a border town, is close to Bardia National Park, and is known for the famous and sacred Bageshwori Temple.

The city is lively with atmosphere, small local markets and rickshaws, allowing you a great opportunity to stretch your legs. Nepalgunj is the last area you will see before traveling into the more remote parts of the western hill regions of Nepal. The rest of the day is at leisure in Nepalgunj, so you will be well-rested for the short adventure that is sure to come.

Max Altitude: 2,300m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Hotel

After an early breakfast, trekkers navigate to the airport for a spectacular flight to Simikot. Along the way, they will see some spectacular mountain scenery, deep, rugged, untamed valleys, and terraced farming fields.

After arriving at Simikot, trekkers will begin the trek towards Darapori.

The trek to Darapori takes trekkers downhill through freshly planted pine forests and passes multiple small villages, such as Majgaon and Dhara Kola, with views of the Karnali River lazily winding through the valley below.

The trail is obvious and marked but could be rocky and steep in some areas. Trekkers will experience relaxed, natural rural beauty in fetal Nepal, see snow-capped mountains in the distance, and see the more colorful and vibrant rural colors of life. Trekkers will sleep in the quiet village of Darapori.

Max Altitude: 2860 Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Hotel

This day in Dharapori started with a nice breakfast before starting your walk to Kermi. Along the way, you walked along the banks of the looming Karnali River, alongside fields of barley and buckwheat, crossing a few suspension bridges.

The walk was moderate, with gentle inclines and descents, surrounded by breathtaking waterfalls cascading off of cliffs and steep rocky crags. At the same time, you noticed the chaotic grandeur of nature but also the beginnings of a more Buddhist landscape; you began to note the appearance of prayer flags, as well as the unusual, small monasteries that were very close by, such as Lakiyo Gompa and Khundrup Choeling Gompa.

Kermi lies halfway up the valley, so this is quite a long walk, and it is known for its natural hot springs, where trekkers can soak after a walk, taking advantage of nature and the beauty of a small village in the Humla region.

Max Altitude: 3,020m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

As you begin your early morning in Kermi, it's time to go hiking on a well-worn path that ascends gradually through beautiful forests and terraced fields. The path is mostly well-defined, but some parts can be slightly rocky and present moderate challenges along the way. On the way you will pass many small villages, these little villages all have markers of local Tibetan culture including prayer flags and traditional houses.

The landscape you will hike through is stunning too, from towering, snow-capped Himalayan peaks to steep valleys with dramatic rivers all providing striking panoramic views. Approaching Yalbang it is quite rustic, almost old-world - you will see the peaceful feeling of the village.

Today's trek is a cultural hike experience focused on the beauty of nature; with luck and good weather it will possibly finish with another peaceful night in the village of Yalbang.

Max Altitude: 3,380m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

You will have a great breakfast in Yalbang to start the day, and then you will walk through the mixed forest of rhododendron and pine. The wind takes the road upward, and the views, when looking back, are truly spectacular. The snow-capped mountains can seem frame-worthy, and the way the Karnali River and the river valleys catch this view below adds to the majesty.

You will pass through small village settlements through the trek. The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming to trekkers. The route on a whole is quite varied with representative slopes and steep climbs and rocky segments that take sure-footedness. In a short time, you'll make it to Tumkot, in the process transitioning from conifer forest to wide-open valleys and peaks in the distance.

Max Altitude: 3,700m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

We will have breakfast and then begin the trek on a mountain trail that follows the contour of the hills. The trail will, in sections, take us into the forest that is close to the surrounding forest, but we will have several observation points that will open up views of the Himalayas. As we trek, we cross several small streams and get to see a few beautiful little villages with prayer wheels and mani stones, which mark an area of Buddhist culture.

The trek is defined as a moderate to hard trek; there will be plenty of steep ups and downs and a few sections with a gradual slope. When we arrive in Yari, we enter a lovely small village in a lush green valley, mostly from the local stone house walls that surround it and views of beautiful mountains all around.

Max Altitude: 4,620m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

As you leave Yari in the early morning, the trail follows an erratic descent to the Karnali River down a series of bridges, which bounce clumsily with the mountain breeze.  A few parts of the path are slippery with the river's mist, but, in general, the path is discernible.

The great pleasure of trekking at this assaltitudinal range is to share your trek with astounding views of jagged cliffs, forested regions, the Himalayas along the horizon, and amazing varieties of flora that are common to the regional area.

When you arrive in Hilsa, an important trading and border town as you get closer to hurdling the border into Tibet, there is a vibrance to the village's market filled with locals making business deals.

Hilsa would certainly take a prominent part in journey travel to this point. Hilsa is a major entry point from Nepal and is an important stop along the journey for many pilgrims and trekkers travelling into the Tibetan plateau.

Max Altitude: 3,800m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

The journey will start with a border crossing from the border crossing at Hilsa into Tibet, then the last leg to Purang (Burang) either by vehicle or by trek.

At this point, you will officially cross into the Tibetan plateau where you will move over some of the most spectacular desolate terrain you have ever seen with snow-capped mountain ranges. In this section of Tibet, the travel will be on flat or gently rolling terrain, which will be a welcome relief from the steep climbs experienced in the Himalayas.

Once you reach Purang, you will be able to access the most pertinent sites, such as the Purang Gompa monastery, the ancient monastery, and the sacred site of Mount Kailash. Purang is a cultural hub which has a growing Tibetan Buddhist community that makes for an engaging place to learn about certain aspects of local culture and customs.

Max Altitude: 4,280m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

The trip to Montser starts at Purang, a village on the western edge of Tibet.  The road/trail zigzags through high, flat terrain and 'mountain-ness' abounding with brilliant scenery and stunning views of the Panoramas around you.  The landscape is barren and stark, still giving the feeling of beauty with unlimited views of a deeper blue sky and clean mountain air.

On route, you may have the chance of seeing nomadic herders with a herd of sheep, not only to enhance the cultural experience, but also for you to experience Tibet that many people will never see.  Montser is an isolated stop with only basic accommodation for right-time stopovers.  It is a scant service which helps the traveler to acclimatize with time in support of the next phases of pilgrimage or trek.  The trek to Montser reinforces that you are in a remote and pristine wilderness environment in the high Himalayas.

Max Altitude: 4,575m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

You will start your day with breakfast and then head over to Garuda Valley (Khyunglung). Garuda Valley was once Shangshung. You will see different strange caves up above cliff ruins and artifacts on and next to the Sutlej River. You will visit some of these caves used to meditate and feel the ruins of the early civilization. After a few hours in the valley, you will head back to the road and back to the open mountains again. We will drive to Darchen in the afternoon. Darchen is the town at the foot of Mount Kailash at 4,670 m. It is a quiet place, but there is quite a bit of energy and excitement from the pilgrims in the area. You will be staying in a guesthouse and preparing for the kora the next day.

Max Altitude: 5,080m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

Darchan is the point of departure for the kora. Early in the morning, leave Darchan and complete the kora in a clockwise direction. The walk passes by Darboche, where the white-garbed pilgrims awaited their departure to start Saga Dawa. After they sleep, trek an arduous section towards Choku Monastery.

After about three hours of relative silence you will get to a deep valley along the Lha‐chu River. Late in the morning, you will arrive at DiraPuk Monastery (≈5,210 m), built around a yogin's cave having a North‐face sight of Mount Kailash, a beautifully spiritual and peaceful place to sleep for the night you have set in. You start the night by watching the mountain illuminated with gold by the setting sun.

Max Altitude: 5,630m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

You will depart DiraPuk Monastery and head towards Dolma La Pass (≈5,630 m) in the early morning. you will do a short climb of some rocky, windy hills, and then you will reach the high point of the kora.

It is at this time that you will see a large empty plateau and then far-off mountains behind you. After you spend some time at the top, you will head down to Gauri Kund Lake (5,608 m) and finally down to Zutulpuk Monastery, which is on the side of a mountain and away from everyone in the world. You reach Zutulpuk Monastery late in the afternoon and see some prayer flags waving in the wind. You set in for the night.

Max Altitude: 4,590m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

You depart from Zutulpuk Monastery in the early morning, taking an easier route down towards Darchen. The journey back is filled with reflections and memories of the kora. You arrive in Darchen by late morning. After lunch you drive two hours to the magnificent Lake Mansarovar, where you are treated to many views of the sacred peak.

In the afternoon, you arrive next to the peaceful cold lake at 4590m. You check in to your guesthouse and walk to the lakeshore area for a peaceful evening, preparing for a full day of touring tomorrow.

Max Altitude: 4,590m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

You will wake up early this morning and walk along the edge of the turquoise lake of Lake Mansarovar.  At 4590 m (15,388 ft), you can see and feel the brisk, clean air, and you can take your time doing pujas and rituals here.

There are many pilgrims in the holy waters of the lake bathing to cleanse their bodies of the sins of their life. You will have the option to walk the full or a part of the way around the circumference of the lake or take a jeep.

The sacred landscape has a vast yet peaceful feeling to it. Late in the afternoon you find yourself back at your guesthouse resting, looking up at a sky that somehow feels peaceful and powerful at the same time.

Max Altitude: 4,640m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Lodge

After having breakfast alongside Lake Mansarovar, you cooped in a vehicle for an expected long drive.  The road winds northwest across Tibet's high plateau, with small settlements nestled among vast plains.

After traveling about 500 km in 7–8 hours beneath a wide blue sky, you arrive in Saga (≈4,640 m) late in the afternoon.

The village is remote and tranquil. You check into a guesthouse in a rolling hills, desert-like field landscape. You can feel the effects of altitude, and now you have a chance to stretch your legs and acclimatize as you get ready for the journey north toward the border.

Max Altitude: 2,800m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Hotel

You will leave Saga early in the morning and use the High Tibetan Plateau roads heading northeast. The journey, about 6-7 hours (≈180 km), will be through emptiness and a high landscape with distant mountainous horizons surrounding you. You will be relatively low in thin air, and there will be virtually no contending topography.

Arrive at Kerong (Kyirong), allowable late afternoon, a border town with some alpine forests and a few stores, possibly a few rustic/makeshift guesthouses or hotels. After you get checked into a hotel, eat some warm local food and take a walk around town in the evening. This stop will give your physical body an opportunity to partially recover from the strain before the long, slow last drop into Nepal.

Max Altitude: 1,400m Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Hotel

You will finish your exit formalities in Kerong and drive to the Rasuwagadhi border after breakfast. Once you cross into Nepal, you will meet your trekking agent or driver.

The road through the alpine Langtang National Park is winding, through hills and forests.

This journey will take around 8–9 hours. In the late afternoon, you will arrive in Kathmandu for a cultural dinner in Thamel. After contemplating your journey and having a Nepalese meal and likely entertainment, you will return to your hotel tired and satisfied.

Max Altitude: 1,400m Meals: Breakfast

After a regular breakfast, you will have adequate time this morning to either make last-minute purchases or souvenir items or possibly visit Swayambhunath or Durbar Square.

Your hotel will arrange for you to go to Tribhuvan International Airport in the late morning or early afternoon, check in for your international flight, and think about the sacred mountains, lakes, and spirits you received in Nepal. In your final farewell to Nepal, you will remember your high trek, prayer flags, and old caves either on your journey home or to your next adventure, spiritually washed and inspired.

Nepalgunj Simikot to Mount Kailash Tour 19 Days – Best Time to Go

One of the best times to begin on a 19-day Nepalgunj Simikot to Mount Kailash Tour is certainly the period from May all the way through to the middle of September.

During that period, the climate in western Nepal and Tibet was nearly the same, with a turquoise sky and mild temperature, which permitted traveling safely over the highest passes and the Tibetan Plateau.

This season also represents the absence of the heavy snows of winter and the coldest time of spring.

Why is May to September Ideal for the Kailash Yatra via Simikot?

The period May-September is the season with the clearest visibility of Mount Kailash and of the nearby peaks, and, furthermore, it comes with a less difficult trek.

Besides, the influence of the monsoon is almost negligible for the far-western part of Nepal and Tibet, thus making the flights from Nepalgunj to Simikot and Simikot to Hilsa more trustworthy. Another point is that the biggest religious dates, such as the Saga Dawa Festival, are during this time, which makes it possible for pilgrimages to reach the highest spirituality.

The hottest temperatures during the day are generally between 12°C and 20°C, while the coldest during the night might be some 0°C-(-5)°C at the highest places. It is very important to bring some warm clothes as well as sun protection.

Off-Season Trek to Mount Kailash via Simikot

Indeed, it is possible, but it’s not the best option. Besides the bad weather during winter, the mountain passes will be blocked, and the airports will have intermittent flights; thus, going from Simikot to Tibet is a no-go.

The area is characterized by low temperatures, plenty of snow, and high winds, with the worst period being from November to March.

How To Be Prepared for Kailash Parvat Yatra From Nepalgunj Simikot?

  1. Physical Fitness: Start with cardiovascular workouts such as hiking, jogging, and cycling no less than 2-3 months ahead of the tour in order to create endurance and stamina. Also, perform a strength workout that involves mainly the legs and the core as this will help you deal with trekking challenges better.
  2. Acclimatization: Look for an option to increase altitude step by step. Spend time during the pre-acclimatization period at Nepalgunj, Simikot, Purang, or close to Mansarovar Lake before going up to the higher parts, as this will help you not to suffer from altitude sickness.
  3. Mental Preparation: Develop a cheerful disposition and make a realistic plan for days of walking and unexpected weather conditions. Besides physical fitness, mental toughness plays an equal role in sports performance.
  4. Gear and Clothing: Buy high-standard trekking boots and a set of warm clothes that consist of base, insulating, and waterproof layers; it is also good to have gloves, hats, and thermal wear. It is advisable to wear your boots before the trek as it will help you to prevent getting blisters.
  5. Trekking Equipment: Take trekking poles, a comfortable backpack, sleeping bags, flashlights, and a first aid kit. Drinking gear is imperative to be able to keep fully hydrated at high altitudes.
  6. Breathing and Flexibility Exercises: Do breathing at full capacity, yoga, and stretching exercises to gain more lung capacity and improve muscle flexibility which is necessary for the hard trek.
  7. Follow Expert Advice: Pay full attention to your tour operator’s directions and comply with them for the sake of your security and convenience.

Difficulty Level of Kailash tour Package From Simikot

The Kailash tour package from Simikot is a moderately strenuous trip that consists of trekking and overland travel. The tour begins with a flight to Simikot, then includes a level of remote trail walking to the Tibet border followed by an overland trip across a large Tibetan plateau.

The most strenuous aspect of the trip will be the Mount Kailash Kora (circuit), which is a 3-day trek (3rd day is 2-3 hours) over the Dolma La Pass at about 5600 meters. The trekking section is not considered technical climbing, but given the altitude and the 14 hours of trekking in a couple of days on the range, you will have to be fit and acclimatized.

This tour can be very rewarding as it offers a spiritual component, stunning landscapes, and a real Himalayan experience.

Accommodations

The accommodations for the Kailash Tour Package from Simikot will be basic yet comfortable enough to achieve this very remote pilgrimage journey. In Nepalgunj and Kathmandu, there will be standard 3-star hotels with air-conditioned rooms and attached bathrooms.

After Simikot, accommodations are limited because you will find simple guest houses that have clean rooms and shared bathrooms or attached bathrooms.

Once you're travelling into Tibet, accommodations along the overland route (Taklakot, Darchen, Saga) will consist of simple guesthouses and lodges with limited amenities.

During the Mount Kailash Kora (circuit), you will be accommodated in very basic dormitory-style guesthouses in Dirapuk and Zuthulphuk, and bathroom facilities will also be shared with limited or no heating. Blankets will be provided, but I would strongly recommend you bring a sleeping bag for comfort and personal hygiene reasons.

Regardless of the comfort level, these accommodations provide you with a place to rest and call home in inhospitable and altitudinous terrain. Travellers should approach the journey with an open mind and be prepared for rustic conditions as part of what will be their spiritual and physical journey.

Meals, Drinking Water and Beverages

The meals in Tibet on the Kailash tour and during the trek in Nepal will generally be vegetarian as a way to respect the spirituality of the yatra as well as the local traditions. In Nepalgunj and Simikot, simple Nepali or Indian meals consisting of rice, lentils, veg, roti, and softer or lighter curries will be the basic meals.

In Tibet, the meals will generally be more basic, and they will typically consist of mainly vegetarian items like soup, noodles, rice, boiled vegetables and Tibetan bread. Meals while on your Mount Kailash Kora will typically be supplied by your support crew, or the meals will be obtained at local tea houses where they will provide simple veg dishes for you. Non-veg food would not otherwise be available during such a sacred journey.

Hot drinks such as tea, herbal tea, coffee, and soup will be available on the duration of the trip to keep you hydrated and warm. It may be worth bringing along your own instant tea or coffee mix. Meals will be light, warm and are easy for your body to digest due to the altitude.

FAQs

This trek is quite challenging and demands a decent level of physical and mental fitness. It is meant for those people who already have some trekking experience or those who have good endurance.

The Parikrama is around 52 km, and, on average, it takes 2 nights and 3 days to finish it. During the trek, the arrangements for camp stays are provided at Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk.

The highest point of the trek is the pass, for which the altitude is about 5660 meters. The elevation of Simikot equals 2910 meters, and the trek goes up to the high Tibetan plateaus.

Absolutely; along with a permit for Nepal and Tibet, one also needs a special one for the border crossing. Professional tour operators are the ones who usually take care of the necessary paperwork.

The crossing of the border is at Hilsa (Nepal side) and Taklakot (Tibet side), so usually, after a helicopter or car ride, you just have to do a short walk. Certainly, it is one of the most easy-going border crossings in the world.

Toyota Land Cruisers or deluxe tourist coaches are typically used for the overland journey. Land Cruisers are four-wheel-drive vehicles perfect for rough roads.

Indeed, there is a 10-day helicopter tour from Simikot that goes along the main places like Hilsa, Taklakot, Mansarovar and Darchen. This means that the travel is faster but costs more than the trek.

Yes, there is the risk of altitude sickness while trekking this high-altitude mountain route (elevations over 4000 meters). Good acclimatization and hydration can help mitigate the effects of altitude sickness.

Yes, any Indian citizen aged 18 - 70 years can apply for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra with some conditions. All tour operators must comply with the Government of India guidelines for Indian pilgrims.

A Land Cruiser typically accommodates four guests, along with a driver and a Sherpa guide, offering a safe and comfortable trip.
