kathmandu Lhasa and EBC Bike Tour Trip Briefing

The Kathmandu Lhasa to KTM Bike Tour and Everest Base Camp (EBC) North Tibet journey is an incredible motorbiking experience that starts with a flight into Kathmandu, Nepal, where you will start preparing for the trip. The trip will take approximately 2200 kilometres and involve mountain passes over 5,000 meters, traversing parts of the Tibetan plateau and ancient monasteries and historical cities like Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse. We will finish our journey at the Everest Base Camp in Tibet at 5,200 meters.

You will start off the Kathmandu Lhasa Bike Tour by flying into Kathmandu, where you will spend a few days getting the final Tibetan visa and using the rented motorbikes that the guides and the mechanics have brought. The Journey will begin with a ride from Kathmandu to the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung and then we will have an acclimatization ride to 4,000 meters, 4,500 meters, and 5,000 meters to prepare for your adventure.

The Motorbike Ride to Lhasa Everest Base Camp will take you from Kathmandu through the Tibetan side of Tingri, Rongbuk Monastery and finally to Everest Base Camp. Once you have visited the EBC and the area you can then make your way to Lhasa where you can see all of the must see cultural sites such as the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. The return trip will be a basic retrace of the same route back to Kathmandu.

This experience is for adventurous people looking for something different: a unique blend of high-altitude motorcycle rides, culture, and stunning views of the Himalayas. It is not as scary as it sounds; you will have fully qualified tour leaders, mechanics, and backup transport to help at every stage.

The Kathmandu to Lhasa Motorcycle Journey is designed for your safety and comfort. The distance from your hotel in the town of Namche Bazaar to the local guesthouses and villages near Everest Base Camp looks long. Still, the hospitality the Tibetans provide during the market trip will make your experience enjoyable.

Tibet Lhasa Everest Base Camp Bike Tour 10 Days provides an excellent opportunity, all along the trip, to view the Himalayas at its centre point, these unique Tibetan culture backdrops, and very close views of Mount Everest.

What Motorbikes are Provided for Lhasa EBC Tour?

Bike Tour to Tibet
Bike Tour to Tibet, EBC

Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 CC

The Himalayan 411 is an excellent adventure motorcycle designed for long-distance mountain touring like the Kathmandu Lhasa Bike Tour, but it is also relatively light, nimble, and robust on challenging roads and rocky tracks. The Himalayan is dependable and comfortable while traversing beautiful valley vistas and negotiating dizzying mountain passes.

The Himalayan is constructed to reach those distant locations that, by their remoteness, probably do not offer what we have come to expect from support services.

Here are some of the best features of the Himalayan:

  • Long travel suspension to absorb and soak up rough roads
  • Upright and relaxed riding position
  • -Simple, minimalist design, function focused
  • -Fully tested and proven reliability at high altitude
  • -Fun accessories are included, e.g., luggage racks and other important accessories.

After organizing the Himalayan trips for years, and given the performance record and ergonomics, it is not surprising that it is a preferred motorcycle for novice and expert riders traversing the Tibetan Plateau.

Royal Enfield Classic 500 CC

If you are in the market for a classic style with the power and toughness to tackle some of the tougher roads of the Himalayas, the Classic 500 might be the right bike for you mainly for your Motorbike Ride to Lhasa Everest Base Camp.

With a healthy 500cc single-cylinder engine, the bike offers plenty of torque and a thumping pleasure (and you'll find many riders challenging themselves to come up with a word other than pleasure – they love this ride). It is for people who want to journey on two wheels the old-fashioned way but with a lot of character.

Noteworthy Features:

  • Classic vintage style with integrity and modern reliability
  • A comfortable position for long journeys and decent handling
  • 500cc engine for climb dep/ steep climbs
  • A great bike for a more relaxed pace.
  • Fully equipped for touring

The Classic is a unique riding experience; heritage fused with performance is difficult to replicate, and many riders are drawn to the model for its adventures and genuine touring characteristics.

Maintenance and Safety Standards for Lhasa Kathmandu Bike Tour

We pride ourselves on the quality of our fleet. Our operational procedures for maintenance and safety mean each motorcycle before and after Kathmandu to Lhasa Motorcycle Journey is well-prepared for the rigors of high-altitude touring:

Each motorcycle is inspected mechanically before going out. We inspect all the motorcycle's systems—including brakes, tires, chains, fluids, lights, and steering—so that all are as safe and sound as possible.

We replace or top off consumables—engine oil, brake fluid, filter—according to the manufacturer's recommendation—that means every 1,000 km on the Himalayan oil level, for example. We don't just repair; we replace.

That means we replace fresh inner tubes, cables, and pads. When all is done, we send you out your bike ready to ride with properly installed luggage racks, soft panniers, USB chargers, and crash protection. You also receive 24/7 mechanical support for all travelers throughout the entire trip.

Motorbike Ride to Everest Base Camp: What to Expect in 2025, 2026?

  • Roads/paths at elevations of 5000 meters plus (Karo-La, Gyanchula, Tong La, Lalung La, Pele La); therefore, acclimatization to altitude is necessary to avoid sickness. You will see all the views of Everest Mountain (8,848m), Makalu, Chengdu, Shisha Pangma, Lhotse, and turquoise lakes (Yamdrok, Namtso), and glaciers, desolate villages.
  • We will visit ancient monasteries (Rongbuk, Tashilhunpo, Palcho), Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Market, and other spiritual places, and other places along the routes.

Two-Day Full Lhasa Sightseeing Tour During Kathmandu Lhasa Bike Tour 10 Days

Your exciting Kathmandu Lhasa Bike Tour and EBC 10 Days includes two full days in the cultural capital of Tibet, Lhasa. These two days will allow you to see many interesting sights that are of your curiosity and desire, giving you a wonderful mix of culture, rituals, spirituality, and unique architectural beauty.

Potala Palace

On your sightseeing day, the first stop will be the Potala Palace (the former winter palace of the Dalai Lama and a UNESCO World Heritage Site).  Potala Palace is renowned for its extraordinary architecture and is in alignment with history itself.

The grounds are massive, and the spaces are grand, with a wide corridor and sacred chapels that will really take your breath away. You will see Lhasa from a completely different view and experience with a step in time.

Jokhang Temple

After Potala Palace, you will go to the Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism, a historic temple that receives thousands of pilgrims every day. The energy of the Jokhang grounds, offerings, and stunning statues and murals create a lively and spiritual setting.

As you meander through the temple, witnessing and observing the many devotees engaged in their own methods of spirituality, you will feel the energy of the temple and the experiences in the moment.

Sera Monastery

Later in the day, make sure you set aside time to visit Sera Monastery to see the entertaining debates between the monks (approximately 3 pm). This monastery has one of the great seats of Tibetan Buddhism and is also a peaceful place to appreciate and contrast Tibetan religious practices and the monastic culture.

Norbulingka Palace

On your second day in Lhasa during Kathmandu Lhasa Bike Tour and EBC 10 Days, you are free to wander and explore Norbulingka Palace (the summer residence of the Dalai Lama). You could easily spend an entire afternoon walking through the lush gardens and all the beautiful and elegant buildings, trying to soak up the stillness and depth of history of the former royal residence.

Drepung Monastery

Finally, you will visit Drepung Monastery in the late morning. Once the largest monastery in the world, Drepung is located at the bottom of the mountain and has good lookout spots to view the mountain tops surrounding it. It would be interesting to walk around the vast courtyards and temples and chapels, and then reflect on the historical importance of Drepung Monastery to Tibetan Buddhism.

Max Altitude: 3650 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

Your Two-Wheel Trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa and EBC starts with an incredible flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa that will provide stunning views of the Himalayas. We will pick you up from Lhasa Gonggar Airport (3650m), where you will meet your local Tibetan guide. Then, we will transport you to your hotel in Lhasa. If you have arrived in Lhasa from somewhere else, we will provide you with the same airport pick-up and transfer to your hotel.

The rest of the day will be spent acclimatizing to the high altitude. This is a good opportunity to relax, hydrate, and get used to this altitude of over 3500m (11,500 ft). We will hold a short briefing with all the bikes, talk about some important safety issues, and outline the ride route you will be cycling. If you feel up to it, you may walk in the Barkhor area but do not push your body on this day.

Max Altitude: 3650 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

Today, it is entirely devoted to exploring the cultural and spiritual center of Tibet - Lhasa. After breakfast, you will start your sightseeing day by visiting the magnificent Potala Palace - the former Dalai Lama's winter residence. This UNESCO World Heritage Site towers above the city as you explore its gracious architecture and contemplate its Tibetan history and Buddhism. Next, you will visit the sacred Jokhang Temple, which is Tibet's holiest site, with many Tibetan pilgrims.

Barkhor Street is a great place to experience Tibetan daily life, buy local crafts, and observe locals in their rituals. Your day will present opportunities to acclimatize to the altitude. The easiest way to acclimatize is to take your time, walk plenty, and drink a lot of hydrating fluids. Your guide will assist you in getting your motorbikes and gear ready. You will be informed about the condition of the roads, safety protocols, and rules that apply to the tour.

The rest of the evening is free time for you to either rest or extend your day by wandering through the seductive streets of Lhasa. You will stay overnight in Lhasa.

Max Altitude: 3650 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

Your second full day in Lhasa follows an ongoing cultural immersion experience. This morning, ride or drive to Drepung Monastery, which at one point was the largest monastery in the world. It is located in a valley below the mountains. Walk through the monastic complex and experience the white-washed buildings and chapels. Take some time to have the resident monks inform you about monastic life in the monastery.

After Drepung Monastery, visit Sera Monastery and witness how it introduces something truly special to your experience. Enjoy a traditional Tibetan lunch at a local restaurant, and have a nice break while you enjoy conversations with others.

If time permits, consider a visit to some of the smaller temples scattered nearby, or you may visit a local Tibetan medicine center for an interesting take on ancient medicine. Max Altitude: 3950 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

Your Lhasa-Kathmandu Bike Adventure continues today, leaving Lhasa and biking southwest to Gyantse. It's about 261 kilometers to ride through some of the most diverse and stunning landscapes in all of Tibet. You will climb to Kamba La Pass (4794m), where you can stop and see one of Tibet's holiest lakes, Yamdrok Lake, which has the most stunning turquoise waters. At some point in the day, you will be riding through the valleys and past some of the villages before reaching Karo La Pass (5045m) from the glaciers that originated from Mount Nojin Kangtsang.

Riding at altitude will definitely push you out of your comfort zone, but you will be able to see some truly memorable sights as you ride this altitude - views around every corner. You will want to stop for photos, lunch breaks, and recharge and stretch when you can. Once you've descended into Gyantse, this small town will instantly win you over with its history and tranquility.

Once you arrive in Gyantse you will definitely want to check out the Gyantse Dzong fort, and the Pelkor Chode Monastery which holds the unique Kumbum Stupa, which is made up of hundreds of chapels.

Max Altitude: 3900 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

After breakfast, continuing Motorbike Ride to Lhasa Everest Base Camp 10 Days you will begin an easy ride of only 90 km from Gyantse to Shigatse, the second biggest city in Tibet. You will have a smooth ride on rolling hills surrounded by rural farmland. This will be an excellent break from the long ride from yesterday.

Along the way you will see Tibetan villages, yaks, terraced fields and so much more. You arrive approximately 1.5 hours later in Shigatse, and check-in to your accommodation. The highlight of the day will be visiting Tashilhunpo Monastery, which is the seat of the Panchen Lama, and is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelugpa school.

Also, not only is it an enormous monastery. with its large temples, golden stupas, and chanting halls you can wander through. If there is time, you may wander around the town area in and around the local market, or you could take a short kora walking around the lead perimeter of the monastery with the local pilgrims.

This day will allow for vehicle check ups, and rider rest days as the next riding days will be at a slightly higher elevation before arriving at Everest Base Camp. The evening is at your leisure. Overnight in Shigatse.

Max Altitude: 4300 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

You will continue your Motorbike Ride to Everest Base Camp after breakfast on Shigatse (≈3,900). The 244 km ride is primarily northeast along the Sino–Nepal Friendship Highway (G318) and will climb forever higher into the mountains. The road takes you into large Tibetan plateaus and along traditional villages.

You will pass Gyatso La Pass (≈5,200 m) and look to the northeast; if weather allows, you will see the north face of Everest. In a matter of an hour or so - the mountains fall behind you, and we eventually descend into the snow-covered valleys and onto tall rolling grasslands. Eventually, you will arrive in Xegar (sometimes known as Shegar) at ~4,300 m by mid-afternoon.

The small town is in a dramatic setting with large mountains far in the distance, silhouetting the horizon with peaks. After checking into a guesthouse, you will have the opportunity to wander and wander around the simple streets, visit local monasteries, and explore Tibetan daily life.

At the end of the night, your guide will meet with the group to discuss and give a brief about your upcoming high-altitude cycle ride to Rongbuk. Xegar will be the final opportunity to buy anything before Rongbuk.

Max Altitude: 4980 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Tented Camp

A fairly short but altitude-challenging day: 95 km to ride from Xegar to Rongbuk Monastery, with approximately 700 m ascent. The ride will start climbing pretty much straight after breakfast. You will become accustomed to riding high, slowly through relatively big valleys, with the snowy peaks framing your distance.

The road will continue to climb as we get near Gawu La (≈ 5,198 m), a high pass where we will finally get expansive views of the Himalayas. Once over the pass, the road dips down again towards the gentle Rongbuk Valley, and by late morning we arrive at Rongbuk Monastery (≈ 4,980 m), highest monastery in the world.

You will have the entire afternoon to acclimatize, so in the spirit of taking it slow and enjoying a visit to the monastery as well as having time to check out the meditation caves under the north face of Everest, we think you will find time usefully consumed.

Optionally: walk to nearby views/points to get as close as possible to the summit of Everest. As it is not motorbike accessible too far, please clarify your options about getting to EBC, you may also need to transfer onto an electric guided tour bus. You will stay overnight at Monastery with Everest views.

Max Altitude: 4350 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

The highlight of your kathmandu Lhasa Bike Tour 10 days will be an early morning transfer (either by electric bus or walking) from Rongbuk to Everest North Base Camp (≈5,150 m) to view the sunrise over tall peaks. You'll have plenty of time to trek in, take photos, and admire the views before heading back to Rongbuk.

After breakfast, you'll get back on your bikes for a 105 km ride to Tingri (≈4,350 m). This will be a scenic, mostly downhill section from Rongbuk to Tingri in the afternoon. You'll be riding through broad alpine grassland with the huge Himalayan Mountains such as Cho Oyu & Makalu above you.

Follow the broad valley until you reach Tingri which will be an important stop for acclimatization. Here you'll check-in to your accommodations, relax for a bit, and maybe visit the small local monasteries and/or busy market. In the evening we will do a route debrief and a bike check for the cross-border ride. Overnight in Tingri.

Max Altitude: 2700 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

Today, we begin the transition from the Tibetan Plateau and our descent into Sub-Alpine country on our Two-Wheel Trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa and EBC. Our 250 km ride which ends at Tingri's 4,350 m. The ride carries us through many broad valleys and over peaks and passes like Lalung La (~ 4,990 m).

Departing our time in the Tibetan highlands, we descend through patchwork farmland and pine forests, and with each meter we descend (in altitude), we notice that the air is beginning to thicken up. We will stop and eat lunch in a local village where we will have a number of options at the teahouse while we enjoy the impressive views of terraced fields in the sunshine. After riding for ~6 hours, we will arrive at Kerung or Gyirong (~2,700 m), the arrival point for many trekkers heading to the Nepal–Tibet border. A sharp contrast to an arid highland, it is lush and green.

It feels like the first noticeably warm stop since we arrived in Kathmandu. Most guests who have passed through here will stay in a comfortable guest house or a tiny hotel. Finish off our travel formalities and permits to the border; check-in our bicycles; refuel and maintenance is king.

Rest and recovery as we prepare to cross the border into Nepal. Overnight in Kerung/Gyirong.

Max Altitude: 1350 Meals: BLDAccommodation: Hotel

You re-enter Nepal along the Kyirong–Rasuwagadhi border today. You will want to have breakfast and complete border formalities before continuing your last 145 km ride through the high Himalayan foothills.

The last day of Kathmandu Lhasa Bike Tour and EBC 10 Days Ride will take you along winding mountain roads through villages occupied by Tamang, Gurung, and other hill community people. You will cross gorges on bridges over canyons of the Trishuli River while riding among lush green ridges and old-growth forests. You will have a lunch stop along the way at a Nepalese hill town.

Arriving the Kathmandu Valley at a lower elevation (≈1,350 m) the road was winding downhill all the way to Kathmandu. You will arrive in the later afternoon, it will be the end of exploration and adventure. You will enjoy a transfer to the hotel or home and your farewell celebrations await with your crew as you rejoice in your memorable motorbiking adventure.

The evening will be marked with packing, sharing and storytelling, and reflecting on your 'ride at the roof of the world’. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Essential Information

Difficulty: How Hard Will the Tibet EBC Biking Tour Be?

The Kathmandu–Lhasa–Kathmandu motorbike journey via Everest Base Camp is an exciting but challenging journey. This tour is generally considered to be moderate, but there are a number of challenges to prepare for.

High Altitudes and Acclimatization

Riders will be riding at heights over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), including an overnight stay near Everest Base Camp at around 5,200 meters (17,060 feet). Your body can become sick due to altitude sickness if you do not acclimate properly. Take your time and allow your body to get used to the air up there.

Uneven Terrain and Weather Conditions

The route has multiple paved and unpaved roads and potential tricky sections relative to weather conditions and road degradation. The weather and terrain in this area may include rain, wind, and cold temperatures. The terrain is wet and cold, particularly at elevations over 2000 meters.

Motorbike Handling and Physical Endurance

Riding a motorcycle under those conditions requires handling skills and physical endurance. Riders should be equally comfortable with long distances traveling, variations in the terrain, and the physical nature of high-altitude riding.

How to Be Prepared as a Motorcyclist for the Kathmandu Lhasa Bike Tour?

Choosing a Ideal Motorcycle

  • Rental Options: Once in Lhasa, you may want to consider renting a motorcycle so you won't have to worry about shipping your motorcycle.
  • Great motorcycle rental options: Some great choices for high-altitude motorcycle touring are the BMW G310 (300cc), BMW F800 (800cc), or the BMW R1200 (1200cc).
  • Rental details: Make sure your rental includes permits and insurance if possible.

Preparing for Altitude

  • Acclimatizing: Make sure that you spend 2 days, or more, in Lhasa to acclimatize to the high altitude of Lhasa (3650m).
  • Hydration: Drink lots of water to help manage altitude sickness.
  • Medication: Check with your medical professional about taking Diamox for altitude sickness.
  • Recognizing Symptoms: Be observant of altitude sickness symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and nausea.

Considerations when collecting gear

  • Clothing - leather, thermals, and waterproof clothing for all weather,
  • Footwear - safety boots or at least good boots,
  • Accessories - gloves, helmet, and a balaclava for the wind,
  • Personal items - first aid kit, sunscreen, hygiene articles for the trip.

Getting Knowledge on Routes and daily distances

  • Route - Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway (G318) Kathmandu to Lhasa via Gyantse, Shigatse, Xegar, and Tingri
  • Daily distances - 90km, 261 km with different types of roads.
  • Rest days - some downtime at Lhasa and some downtime in one of the overnight towns along the ride will give you time to take it easy, and see some sites when you need to catch your breath.

Familiarize Yourself with the Local Traffic Laws.

  • Driving Sides: Nepal drives on the left side of the road; China drives on the right side of the road.
  • Speed Limits: Always obey the posted speed limit and be reasonable regarding road conditions.
  • Road Hazards: Be on the lookout for livestock, pedestrians, and uneven surfaces of the road itself.
  • Be prepared with motorcycle maintenance: rubber, oil levels, and brakes - check before every ride. Spare Parts: Pack the spare parts that you remove often (i.e., tubes, chains, spark plugs). Fuel: Always plan to see a fuel stop - as you go more remote, you will see fewer fuel stops.

Know the Weather Pattern

  • Seasons - Spring (April - June) and autumn (September - November) are more ideal trek times of the year because there will generally be less windy and better air temperature conditions.
  • Weather - Use the weather forecast to help predict and notice actual weather changes.

Know about the area's Local culture

  • Be Respectful: As always, be aware of local customs and traditions.
  • Language: Learning a few basic words and phrases in Nepali and Tibetan can enhance your interaction with locals.
  • Photographic Respect: Always ask permission before you take someone's photograph (monks and locals in particular).

Emergency preparedness

  • Communication: Carry a satellite phone or local SIM card for possible emergencies and for communication while on any independent long distance trek.
  • Emergent numbers: Be sure you know emergent contact numbers for that area as well.
  • Insurance: Be sure that you have travel and medical insurance that provides coverage for trekking activities at a high altitude.

In spring (April-June), the weather is warm, visibility is good, and limited rain will provide a good experience on the road, including great visibility throughout the route. In autumn (September and October), the weather is similar, with good air, limited rain, and great enjoyment riding up and down the mountains.

The summer months (July and August) may not be a good time to travel due to rainfall, the risk of landslides, and poor visibility, making a motorcycle tour unsuitable. In the winter months (December-February), it gets very cold in terms of high winds and snow conditions, making finishing tours difficult for the riders.

Scheduling for a Kathmandu to Lhasa motorcycle tour in spring or fall provides you with the best opportunity for a safe and enjoyable motorcycle experience.

Accommodation Availability

On the KTM-Lhasa-EBC Motorbike Tour, accommodation is selected for comfort and relaxation after a couple of long days of riding. Some route selections will consider available accommodation and rest-stop options. Accommodation will range between hotel and guesthouse, and riders can expect to have single rooms if they prefer private or twin-sharing rooms for the riders with partners, or riders could look for a new buddy to adventure with.

In the larger lobbying cities of Kathmandu and Lhasa, hotels generally have modern comforts like WIFI, hot showers, linens, etc. Less developed towns and those near Everest Base Camp will almost always have guesthouses, which are clean, understandable accommodations with generally friendly, hospitable means of accommodations.

Single Room

Single rooms offer seclusion and a chance to unwind after a day of traveling. Single rooms are preferred by solo travelers (or those who like personal space) but are not always available in remote regions of travel.

Twin Sharing Room

The twin-sharing room may be perfect for friends, couples, or even solo travelers who do not mind sharing with another traveler. This is usually a less expensive option; it develops a brother or sisterhood with riding mates.

Meals for the Tibet Biking Tour

Your meals during Lhasa-Kathmandu Bike Adventure are vital components as they provide fuel and cultural engagement. The majority of tours include breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day of the tour, with the menus typically comprising local and international dishes.

In larger cities your meals will often be in the restaurants and you will find a variety of different cuisines, while in more remote places you will be provided group meals that are basic but hearty Tibetan and Nepali meals. Meals will include fresh local ingredients, hot drinks for taste and warmth, and quantity to provide energy and some comfort from the altitude.

We can accommodate dietary restrictions when we discuss them ahead of time, but meals are much more than eating: they are socializing, storytelling, and hospitality.

Breakfast

During the tour, breakfast will most frequently take place within the hotel or guesthouse. Breakfast will generally include a spread of bread, eggs, porridge, fruit, tea, and coffee. This reflection meal is a healthy breakfast to nourish and provide energy for today's morning ride.

Lunch

Lunch may also mostly take place in local restaurants or roadside stops along the route. Lunch is generally rice or noodles, vegetables, and meat/tofu, with some soup (it is generally about the kind of soup, but often has some kind of angry spicey kick that goes nicely with white rice). Lunch provides a reasonable balance of protein and carbohydrate, "+" energy for a long day.

Dinner

Dinner will generally be served right in the hotel or next door to the hotel in an eatery, and the last meal of the day will be a mix of Tibetan, Nepali, and Chinese food, including vegetarian or meeting diet specifics.
