Nepal Tibet Tour 12 Day Introduction

With the combination of natural beauty in Nepal and rich spiritual culture found in Tibet, this 12-day tour is an excellent travel adventure for those who want relaxation and adventure in one trip. You'll get plenty of mountain scenery, historical sites, and breathtaking vistas while exploring each portion at altitude.

You'll begin your experience in Kathmandu, your point of departure, and see how people from these two countries interact with friendly hospitality. After enjoying time in Kathmandu, you'll travel to Pokhara, enjoy many beautiful sights along the way, including lakes surrounded by the Annapurna Range, plus peaceful locations where you can take time for yourself. After returning from Pokhara, you'll also have an opportunity to discover the history of Kathmandu itself before continuing into Tibet.

The tour then takes you on stunning flights over the Himalayas to Lhasa, Tibet's spiritual center of gravity. For the next few days, you'll take in Tibetan culture by visiting key attractions such as the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple, and the colorful local markets. You'll also explore the Tibetan way of life through monasteries and traditional Buddhist practices.

The overland trip to Shigatse takes you through some of the country's most breathtaking views, over the highest mountain passes, and through the most authentic Tibetan towns. In Shigatse, you'll feel a world away from anything you've experienced before.

This 12-day tour of Nepal and Tibet ends in Kathmandu and is a fantastic way to see, experience, and appreciate both the natural beauty of the Himalayas and the culture and spirituality of the Tibetan people, all on one enriching journey. Dream Tibet Travel and Tours has been providing tours on this route for many years. We make arrangements for all permits, flights, guides, and hotels. So the only thing you need to bring is your luggage and your curiosity.

What Makes This Nepal Tibet Tour the Best 12-Day Package in 2026?

  • All permits are taken care of by us. Tibet works differently from most other destinations. It's not possible to enter Tibet independently. So all foreign travelers must acquire a Tibet Travel Permit prior to travel, and these permits can only be obtained through a licensed Tibetan travel company. That's us. You won't fill in a single form. We'll send you the permits before you depart.

  • Trans-Himalayan flights are included. Many companies promote low package prices with the Kathmandu to Lhasa flights tacked on afterward. But with us, the flights are completely bundled into the cost of your trip. Zero surprises.

  • Local guides in both countries. Your licensed, English-speaking guide in Nepal will be different from your licensed, English-speaking guide in Tibet. Both are local and very familiar with the areas you'll be visiting. They don't just read you facts. They tell you the stories behind them and take you off the main path where you'll build a deeper connection with each place.

  • Built-in acclimatization. Lhasa sits at 3,650m and Shigatse at 3,860m, so altitude sickness is a very real possibility. This itinerary includes an entire acclimatization day in Lhasa before any sightseeing. We don't rush you to altitude just to save one day. Your safety is the number one priority.

  • Flexible and customizable. The 12-day itinerary suits the majority of travelers. But if you want to add extra days in Nepal, the Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side, or Namtso Lake, we can build that in. If you want to do less, we can shorten it. Just let us know your dates, and we'll build around them.

  • No hidden pricing, full transparency. This trip price covers flights, fees, guides, entrance tickets, hotels, and transportation. All expenses are made clear in advance, so no hidden fees await you upon your arrival in Lhasa.

Nepal Tibet Tour 12 Days Cost 2026 and 2027

The 12-day Nepal Tibet Tour costs USD $1,850 per person. It's a fully supported and well-organized trip. But it doesn't fall into either the budget or luxury category. The price shown is the total cost for a well-organized tour that includes almost all major areas of expense. A detailed breakdown of each component is provided below.

What's Included

Estimated Individual Cost if Booked Alone

Kathmandu–Lhasa–Kathmandu flights

$400 - $600

Tibet Travel Permit

$80 - $120

Licensed guide (Nepal + Tibet, 12 days)

$300 - $400

All hotel accommodation (11 nights)

$400 - $600

All entrance fees (7+ sites)

$100 - $150

Private vehicle and transfers

$200 - $300

Meals in Tibet (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

$150 - $200

Total if arranged independently

$1,630 - $2,370

When you consider the total cost of arranging all the various components individually, plus the time you'd spend doing it, it's clear that the package price represents extremely good value for money. It's also one of the best travel decisions you'll ever make.

In addition, there are intangibles that can't be given a price. Having an expert obtain your Tibet permit, since foreigners can't obtain the necessary permits on their own, is one of them. Plus, having local guides in each country ready to help when you encounter problems, and having 24/7 access to a team of people who've done this exact itinerary hundreds of times, all add to the value of the trip.

There are no extra or hidden fees with our packages. The only items excluded from the price are international flights to Kathmandu, travel insurance, and personal expenses. All additional expenses will be disclosed to you before you arrive, so there are no surprises when you get there.

Is This Nepal Tibet Tour Right for You?

  • If your vision is of the spiritual, cultural, and natural beauty of both countries, and you also want to have one company arrange all of your travel hassle-free with no coordination issues, then this trip is for you!

  • If you have an interest in Buddhism, the Himalayas, history, or hiking experience, if you are healthy enough to enjoy a moderate amount of walking around at high elevations,

  • You would rather provide a small number of people to share your private experience instead of joining one of those large, packed bus tours filled with 40+ people from different places, and finally, you can be available for travel to both countries over a period of time of 12-15 days.

If you want to see only Tibet, Nepal, or if all you are interested in is trekking, you should look into different packages. We offer other packages that include just one of Tibet or Nepal, or just trekking, so please contact us if you need help finding the right one.

The fitness level you need to take this tour is not athletic. It involves a moderate amount of walking each day, about 3 to 5 km on most days, which may include some climbing stairs when visiting monasteries. The major concern for this package is the altitude in Tibet, which affects everyone differently. If you are in normal health for your age and comply with the acclimatization advice, most travelers can complete this tour with very few problems.

Two Countries Nepal and Tibet Tour In 12 Days in 2026/27

The type of travelers who take this trip want neither beaches nor cities. They simply wish to visit somewhere so ancient that they feel how insignificant their existence seems compared to the enormity of the universe around them. They see themselves as just droplets in a massive ocean.

On Day 1, you'll get that feeling. Just stand at the Boudhanath Stupa and watch the Tibetan monks walking clockwise around a massive white dome, floating in the morning fog. Listen to the prayer flags rustling in the wind above your head. And you'll realize you're not just another tourist. You're experiencing something that has been continuously happening for thousands of years without interruption.

Tibet is geographically enormous, roughly double the size in square kilometers compared to most other countries.

When you first descend from the aircraft in Lhasa, the impact of high altitude will be felt in your lungs with your very first breath of thin Tibetan mountain air. The quality of light at 3,650 meters is immediately different. Everything appears sharper and more saturated with color and gold. You'll also see a clear blue sky, unlike anything you've seen before. The Potala Palace rises out of the valley floor like a monument from another world and makes it immediately clear why people have traveled across continents to experience this mystical and spiritual place.

The experience at dawn from the Jokhang Temple courtyard, the sweet smell of juniper-scented incense floating through Sera Monastery, the sound of chanting monks reverberating within a room that has been home to the same 500-year-old prayers. Plus, the breathtaking drive along the Friendship Highway between Lhasa and Shigatse with stunning snow-capped mountains on either side. These experiences don't belong on a sightseeing checklist. They're the moments that'll last forever in your memory. The ones you'll still be sharing with people 20 years from now.

Twelve days is all you need to experience both Nepal and Tibet. You'll have time to see how the two countries diverge from one another and how they're also so similar. You'll have had adequate time to adjust to both places before returning home, different from when you arrived.

Swayambhunath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Budhanilkantha. (Boudhanath, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, built in 5th century AD)

After breakfast, you will set out on a full-day tour around Kathmandu Valley with the world heritage sites and centuries-old temples, monasteries and sacred Hindu & Buddhist sites. Your day starts with a visit to Swayambhunath Stupa (the Monkey Temple), which is perched on a verdant hilltop overlooking the city. Monks chant in a whisper behind ancient shrines, where prayer flags flutter like kite tails.

Then you will visit the Pashupatinath Temple (one of the holy temples of Lord Shiva) from here. Near the Bagmati River, you can see the traditional rituals and part of Nepali life in a spiritual manner.

Next is the visit to the great Boudhanath Stupa, which is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world and where pilgrims walk around and spin prayer wheels sheepishly chanting mantras. This is a totally different feeling from the bustling street you leave behind.

The last place you will visit is Budhanilkantha Temple, the giant statue of Lord Vishnu lying on the water. You will return to the hotel after a fruitful cultural day.

Max Altitude: 3650m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Kyichu Hotel, Lhasa

Trans-Himalayan flight to Lhasa, full acclimatization day. (Flight duration, 55 minutes, crosses over world's highest mountain range, Lhasa sits at 3,650m above sea level)

Today, your journey takes you from Nepal to Tibet, taking the most spectacular flight up into the Himalayas as you fly over Mt Everest itself on a life-changing flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa! You will drop off at Tribhuvan International Airport early in the morning for one of the most beautiful mountain flights on earth.

When the skies are clear, passengers are treated to breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayan range, with Mount Everest and many snow-heavy peaks lining up in a row. Meet your Tibetan guide after landing and take a scenic drive to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River after arriving at Gonggar Airport in Tibet. The mountain terrain, brightly colored prayer flags and classical traditional Tibetan villages exude an entirely different experience than that of Nepal.

However, as Lhasa is literally much higher up, the rest of the day is left free for acclimatization and rest, your guide will tell you to search slowly, drink more water and also skip a healthy activity. China. But in the evening, you will find yourself surrounded by peace in the Tibetan capital and then prepare for cultural exploration ahead.

Max Altitude: 3,650m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Kyichu Hotel, Lhasa

Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street. (Potala Palace, 13 storeys, 1,000 rooms, built in 7th century, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994)

On your first full day of sightseeing in Lhasa, the day begins with a visit to the Potala Palace, an incredible feat of architecture with the building consisting of 13 stories, more than 1,000 rooms, and one of the most stunning structures ever made by humankind.

It is immediately apparent, standing at the foot of the mountain and looking at the palace, that millions of people travel from every part of the world to see it. Your local guide will take you through the golden chapels, the tombs of past Dalai Lamas, and the thousands of years of Tibetan history contained inside these walls.

The afternoon moves to the Jokhang Temple, which is the heart of pilgrimage in Tibet. Built in the 7th century, the temple continues to draw pilgrims from all areas of the Tibetan plateau every day. As you leave the Jokhang Temple, you can step out and walk down Barkhor Street, which is the ancient circular route that pilgrims take to circumambulate the temple, along with the local people who walk this same route.

You'll see local people spinning prayer wheels, burning juniper, and quietly chanting the many different prayer mantras. This is a living, unfiltered history that you will never forget.

Max Altitude: 3,650m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Kyichu Hotel, Lhasa

Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery monk debates. (Drepung, founded 1416, once housed over 10,000 monks, largest monastery in the world at its peak)

The morning starts at Drepung Monastery, established in 1416, and was the largest monastery in the world with a total of more than 10,000 monks at its peak. Your local expert tour guide will take you through the vast courtyard, assembly halls, and astounding thangka and scripture collections which have stood here for centuries at Drepung.

Drepung is a massive, serious, and silent place that remains with you.

In the afternoon, you will visit the Sera Monastery, where you will experience one of the most noteworthy events on this trip. Each afternoon, monks gather in the debating courtyard of Sera to engage in a public discussion of Buddhist philosophy, which has been done for centuries.

The style of debate is very theatrical, with much excitement and loudness. Each point is punctuated with sharp hand claps as an expression of agreement with the points made. When you witness this event, and the guide provides context about the event, you will witness something truly meaningful.

Max Altitude: 3,860m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Manasarovar Hotel, Shigatse

Drive via Friendship Highway. (Shigatse,  Tibet's second largest city, 3,860m altitude, 350km from Lhasa, approximately 8 - 9 hours drive)

Today, we will depart Lhasa after breakfast and enjoy a scenic overland drive to Shigatse, the second city of Tibet. This journey features some of the most dramatic landscapes in this part of the Tibetan plateau. Along the way, travelers also see stunning turquoise lakes, vast valleys, snow-capped peaks and never-ending grasslands dotted with grazing yaks and sheep.

The highlight of the drive is crossing Gyatso La Pass, a wide expanse of Himalayan scenery seeming to reach endlessly into the horizon. Small Tibetan villages pop up from time to time along the highway, allowing visitors to understand better the simple mountain life that shapes these communities. After several short breaks and stops for photographs, we will reach Shigatse in the evening.

Max Altitude: 3,650m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Kyichu Hotel, Lhasa

Tashilhunpo Monastery, drive back to Lhasa. (Tashilhunpo, built 1447 by First Dalai Lama, seat of Panchen Lama, houses 600 monks)

Today, we will visit the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional home of the Panchen Lama, and one of the most important monasteries in Tibet. Pilgrims place butter lamps and prayers inside holy chapels. The serene setting lets tourists taste the spiritual side of Tibetan Buddhism with authenticity and serenity. After visiting the monastery, drive back to Lhasa.

On the return visit, you will once again experience the breathtaking mountain scenery, valleys and plains between rivers at high altitude under a clear sky of Tibet. You can also stop by some viewpoints en route to the one you will enjoy more, and take photos of your surrounding Himalayan region. You will return to Lhasa in the evening and stay overnight at a hotel.

Max Altitude: 1,350m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Hotel

Essential Information

Best Time to do Tibet Nepal Tour

The months that are best for traveling through Nepal and Tibet (A Trip to Tibet from Nepal) would be April, May, September, and October. These are the time periods that give you the greatest visibility and road conditions, along with the Chang Tang portions of Tibet opening to tourists during these time periods.

During the spring months (March-May), you can expect to have very warm daytime temperatures, endless blooming rhododendrons throughout Nepal, and fantastic visibility of the Himalayas. Furthermore, because April and May are the two most popular months for traveling through upcoming changes, there should not be any problems for you as well.

The autumn months (September-November) are similar to the spring months in their beauty. The monsoons usually leave Nepal with very clear skies, allowing you to see the mountains in incredible detail. The month of October is very dry in Tibet, and is also by far the most favorable month overall for completing the entire route to Tibet.

Traveling in February for travel through Tibet is generally not recommended, since Tibet is usually closed to foreign citizens during that time frame. Conversely, the monsoons in July and August can make traveling through Nepal generally quite uncomfortable; therefore, we can not recommend these months.

If you can only travel to Nepal (for instance) one time throughout the year, you would be remiss if you choose to travel to Nepal in October.

  • Nepal Section Reduction: If you can't stay in Nepal for very long or if you've already gone to Nepal, you can still do a 9 or 10-day trip by reducing this section of the trip from 5 days to 2 in Kathmandu without losing any value of your overall Tibet experience.

  • Starting Point Change: If you are in Asia already, we can start from a different location. Some travelers have flown directly into Lhasa from Chengdu or Beijing and added the Nepal section after that, so we can alter the whole flow around your existing flight.

  • Bhutan Addition: The Nepal Tibet Tour can be expanded into a Nepal – Tibet – Bhutan combination for a total of 5 to 6 more days with Paro, Thimphu, and the famous Tiger's Nest Monastery in Bhutan – truly one of the "wonderful" three-country Himalayan journeys.

To get a custom quote, all you need to do is provide your travel dates, the number of people traveling in your party, and any other ideas or preferences you may have. We will reply with a full proposal within 24 hours. There is no obligation at the inquiry and will only be a discussion about how to set up the best package for you.

Altitude Sickness on the Nepal Tibet Tour - What to Expect and How We Handle It

As first-time travelers to Tibet, many individuals pose this question: What is altitude sickness? How am I going to prepare for altitude sickness? This is a very significant question, and we are pleased to provide the specifics here so that you will know precisely what to expect.

Here are your answers, straightened according to the Cities you can go thru.

Altitude Measurements for Each City

  • Kathmandu: 1,350m / 4,435ft

  • Lhasa: 3,650m / 11,975ft

  • Shigatse: 3,860m / 12,693ft

One of the biggest shocks on this trip will be making the leap from Kathmandu at 1,350m to Lhasa at 3,650m in just 1 hour. Your body has no time to acclimatize. It has just 1 hour of flight time, and then you land in Lhasa. So all travelers may experience symptoms of altitude sickness upon arrival, regardless of age or physical condition.

  • Difficulty sleeping

What We Do to Protect You

  • On your first full day in Lhasa, we include a full acclimatization day in your itinerary. You won't be sightseeing or walking around. Your only purpose will be to rest, hydrate, and allow your body to adjust.

  • Our guides are trained to recognize symptoms of altitude sickness and respond accordingly.

  • Oxygen is available at your hotel in Lhasa if necessary.

  • Prior to your departure, we provide each traveler with a briefing on what to eat and drink, plus what to avoid during the first 48 hours at high altitude.

  • On the first full day after arrival in Tibet, we don't schedule any strenuous activities.

What You Should Do Before Your Tour

  • Consult your doctor regarding Diamox (acetazolamide) as a preventive measure against altitude sickness.

  • Avoid alcohol for the first two days after arriving in Tibet.

  • Drink 3 to 4 liters of water per day while in Tibet.

  • Take your time moving around. Slow movements can help alleviate potential problems at high altitude.

Most of our travelers complete this trip without experiencing significant altitude issues. Listening to your body will be the key to successful acclimatization. And our guides will be with you every step of the way.

Can You Do This Nepal Tibet Tour Solo?

A common question we receive is: Can I still do this tour if I'm traveling alone? The answer is yes. Here's what a solo traveller on this tour looks like.

In Nepal

Traveling solo in Nepal is completely unrestricted. You'll have a private driver and private guide, so the entire sightseeing portion in Kathmandu and Pokhara will fit your own pace. You won't have to wait for anyone else. You can stop as you wish, stay longer at places of interest, or skip places you find uninteresting.

In Tibet

Tibet is a bit more specific. According to current law, all foreign visitors to Tibet must travel as part of a licensed tour. So you won't be able to enter Tibet alone as an independent traveller. But this means we can create a private tour solely designed for you, with your own private guide, private vehicle, and custom itinerary. All the freedom of traveling alone, plus all the support of a professional team.

Solo Pricing

Solo travelers typically pay slightly higher per-person rates than those traveling with another person. It's because your vehicle and guide fees don't change whether you're traveling alone or with someone else. We're open about this and can provide you with an exact solo quote upon request.

The Benefit of Solo Travel on This Tour

The advantage of traveling solo is that you'll have the most personalised experience possible. Your guide will only be focused on you, so you can ask as many questions as you'd like. Want to spend an extra hour at Potala Palace? No problem. You're not rushed. Many of our happiest customers travel solo for exactly this reason.

Tibet Travel Permit: What It Is and How We Arrange It for You

The Tibet Tourism Bureau requires all foreigners visiting Tibet to obtain a specific permission known as the Tibet Travel Permit, also referred to as the Tibet Travel Authorization. The Permit is a vital document that enables foreigners to cross from Nepal into Tibet. But it can only be applied for and processed through a legal contractor established by the Government of Tibet. So the application must be made through a licensed travel agency that provides traveler services.

A licensed travel agency providing Permit Issuance must:

  • Submit a copy of your passport, passport photo, and itinerary to the Tibet Tourism Bureau.

  • Process your application in approximately 10 to 15 working days.

  • Receive your Permit and send it to you before your departure from Nepal.

  • Have your guide carry your Permit and present it to the appropriate authorities during your journey in Tibet.

The only requirement for you as the traveler is to submit a copy of your passport to the travel agency. That's it. So this is the primary reason you must book your trip to Tibet with a licensed travel agency like Dream Tibet. There are no other legal ways to travel to Tibet.

Visa to Visit Tibet from Nepal

Does Nepal offer a visa on arrival? Yes, many countries receive visas on arrival at the airport in Kathmandu. The costs are $25 USD for 15 days or $40 USD for 30 days. Indian, Chinese, and certain other nationals have different options for obtaining a Nepal visa.

Tibet does not issue separate visas. But there is a Chinese group visa that you'll enter through when visiting Tibet with a travel permit. This is included with your tour through us.

Documents You Must Carry on This Nepal Tibet Tour

All travelers should store physical copies of the following when traveling through Nepal and on to Tibet.

  • Your original passport. Ensure it's valid for at least six months following your trip's end date.

  • Your Nepal visa. Obtain it prior to arrival or get it at the point of entry.

  • Tibet Travel Permit. Your tour guide will have the original. But you must keep a copy.

  • Your Chinese group visa. Your tour provider will supply documentation for each person in the group.

  • Your travel insurance. Keep your policy number and emergency contact number handy at all times.

  • Printed itinerary and hotel information from your tour provider.

  • Emergency contact number for Dream Tibet: +977 9851162422

  • 2 to 4 passport-sized photos. These are required at permit checkpoints in Tibet.

Tibet has police checkpoints along the route from Lhasa to Shigatse. So your tour guide will also look over the documents mentioned above. But by keeping your own copies handy, you'll help speed up the process at checkpoints and have a backup if something goes missing during your travels.

Health Requirements Before You Travel to Tibet from Nepal

Tibet and Nepal do not require any vaccinations. But depending on where you live and your medical condition, your doctor may recommend the following.

  • Hepatitis A and B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus

  • Rabies, if you're planning to spend extended time in the countryside

In addition to general travel healthcare needs, high altitude is of particular importance in Tibet.

  • Consult your physician regarding Diamox (acetazolamide) at least two weeks prior to travel. This medication is commonly given to travelers visiting Tibet to help them acclimatize to high altitudes.

  • If you have any problems related to the heart, lungs, or high blood pressure, obtain a complete medical clearance before traveling to Tibet.

  • There's no minimum fitness standard required for this tour. But your baseline fitness will play a vital role in your ability to deal with high altitude.

Before Leaving for Tibet

  • Get a dental examination. Dental problems caused by high altitude can be exceedingly painful and difficult to resolve.

  • Pack a small personal first aid kit.

  • Ensure you have a minimum 12-day supply of prescription medications plus an extra week's worth as backup.

Travel Insurance for Nepal Tibet Tour

Travel insurance is not optional on this tour. It's a travel requirement and it's included in the package.

Why is it so important on this route? Because medical evacuation from Tibet is extremely expensive. If a serious altitude-related illness or injury occurs in Lhasa or Shigatse and emergency evacuation is required back to Kathmandu or home, the actual cost without insurance can range from $30,000 to $100,000. Travel insurance covers you for this type of cost in its entirety.

Your travel insurance policy must include:

  • Coverage for travel to high altitudes of at least 4,000m, as Shigatse sits at 3,860m

  • Emergency medical evacuation

  • Trip cancellation and interruption

  • Lost and stolen items

  • Overseas medical expenses

Things to check before purchasing

Standard travel insurance companies don't cover high-altitude destinations. So read the fine print very carefully or contact your insurance company to confirm that travel to Tibet will be covered. Many companies offer specific policies for the Himalayas.

We highly recommend booking your travel insurance at the same time you book your tour. Don't wait until the week before you leave. If something happens before you travel but you haven't purchased insurance yet, cancellation coverage will only apply if you purchased the insurance prior to booking your travel.

Is the Nepal Tibet Tour Safe?

When done by a licensed, professional tour operator with the required licenses, permits, and experienced guides, this tour provides a safe experience. Here's an accurate overview of the safety considerations.

Politics

Political situation: The political situation in Tibet is sensitive. But tourists on a licensed tour won't encounter any issues associated with political problems. You don't run any risk as a tourist, and the areas you'll visit, such as Lhasa and Shigatse, are considered safe for tourists.

Road Safety

The route from Lhasa to Shigatse, approximately 350km, is very well paved. Our drivers are familiar with the roadways. Travel takes 8 to 9 hours, and there'll be periodic rest stops along the way.

Altitude

This is by far the biggest safety factor on this tour. But if you acclimatize properly before beginning your adventure, stay well hydrated, and know what altitude sickness symptoms look like, you should be able to effectively manage your symptoms. Dream Tibet has never had a customer develop serious altitude sickness on this tour, so long as the group has followed the recommended pre-acclimatization plan.

Kathmandu and Pokhara are two of the most well-traveled tourist destinations in the world and are very safe for all travelers, including solo female visitors. Just use normal urban caution with regard to personal property in busy areas such as Thamel.

Food on the Nepal Tibet Tour

Food will be one of the best parts of this trip. The cuisines of Nepal and Tibet are very different from each other, and both have great culinary options.

Food in Nepal

Many dishes in Nepal center around Dal Bhat, a lentil soup usually served with rice, vegetables, and pickles. It's eaten by most Nepalis twice a day and can be refilled as much as you want at local restaurants. In addition to Dal Bhat, Kathmandu and Pokhara also have many excellent international restaurants serving Indian, Italian, Chinese, and continental food at very reasonable prices.

You'll want to try the following.

  • Momos, Tibetan-style dumplings that are very popular in Nepal

  • Dal Bhat

  • Newari food in the Old City of Kathmandu

  • Fresh buffalo curd with honey in Pokhara

Food in Tibet

Tibetan cuisine is hearty and warming, perfect for high altitudes. You'll receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day on your tour in Tibet.

You'll want to try the following.

  • Butter Tea (Po Cha). Tea that has been salted and churned with yak butter. It seems unusual at first. But once you try it, you'll feel warm and energized.

  • Tsampa. Roasted barley flour is the staple of the Tibetan diet.

  • Yak meat dishes.

  • Thukpa. A thick noodle soup that's perfect for high altitude.

  • Tibetan bread with honey.

Vegetarians will be happy to know that throughout Nepal and Tibet, you'll be able to eat well. Just let us know at the time of booking so your guide can communicate this with every restaurant you visit.

Hotels on This Tour: Accommodation Standards You Can Expect

The accommodation for this tour consists of twin-share, comfortable 3-star hotels. Single room upgrades can be purchased at an extra fee.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara)

Hotels in Nepal have nice decor with private washrooms, hot and cold water, WiFi, plus daily breakfast included. The Kathmandu hotels are located within or around the Thamel area, where most tourists stay. You'll be within walking distance of many restaurants, shops, and various sites throughout the Kathmandu Valley. The Pokhara hotels are located along Lakeside, the main shopping area near Phewa Lake.

In Tibet (Lhasa and Shigatse):

City

Hotel

Standard

Lhasa

Kyichu Hotel

3-star, centrally located near Barkhor

Shigatse

Manasarovar Hotel

3-star, comfortable, near Tashilhunpo

Lodging in Tibet is generally comfortable and clean. But it does differ from typical Western hotel standards. Hot water is sometimes only available during set time periods, and wireless internet is available but generally slow and limited. These factors could be considered inconveniences. But they also contribute significantly to the experience of being in Tibet and provide an opportunity to experience something more than just a hotel stay.

Lodging in Lhasa also has the option to upgrade to a 4-star or 5-star hotel. Contact us for additional details about pricing.

How to Reach Your Tour Starting Point Kathmandu?

Kathmandu is the starting and finishing point of this trip. So what's the best way to get there? The answer depends on where you're coming from.

By Air

The most common way to arrive is by air. Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu connects with all major Asian cities and handles most international flights into and out of Nepal. The most likely connecting cities are listed below.

  • Dubai, via Emirates and FlyDubai

  • Doha, via Qatar Airways

  • Delhi and Mumbai, via Air India and IndiGo

  • Singapore, via Singapore Airlines and Scoot

  • Kuala Lumpur, via AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines

  • Bangkok, via Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways

  • Guangzhou and Chengdu, via China Southern and Sichuan Airlines

Approximate Travel Times

  • From London: 10 to 12 hours with one stop

  • From New York: 16 to 18 hours with one stop

  • From Sydney: 14 to 16 hours with one stop

  • From Delhi: 1.5 hours non-stop

By Land from India

There are several border crossings between India and Nepal. The most traveled crossing for tourists is Sunauli to Bhairahawa. But the bus or flight from Bhairahawa to Kathmandu will take significantly longer than traveling by air. If you're already in India, this is still worth considering as an option.

We highly recommend arriving in Kathmandu a day before your tour start date. This allows time for any flight delays and gives you a chance to adjust before the tour begins.
